Non-Binary Skills

Wait a minute. Did I miss something, or did 3rd edition only come out about 10 years ago? When were you doing skill checks in D&D more than 20 years ago? And how, more than 20 years ago where you playing at tables that all managed to adopt identical house rules regarding skill usage?

There's been non-weapon proficiencies since the mid 80s, and of course dice rolls from the first rpg game played. Why is it so unbelievable to you that people treat a failure by 1 and a total flub differently? Most people do it.

Because in my experience and, from the sound of it, Celebrim's as well, most people do not.

In my experience, almost all fights have someone (usually NPC, sometimes PC) go to Disabled. In my experience, "Magic bad!" is the last words PC wizards ever hear (often spoken by PC barbarians or fighters). In my experience, DMs kill at least one character from every player by the end of two campaigns.
However, I don't generalize from my experiences to universal experiences. I simply note that this is what I have seen and am often surprised at how vastly it differs from what others experience. Just one more joy and mystery of our collective hobby.

It is strange watching the two of you largely ignore each others' posts, focusing on one trivial point and not even pretending to engage in an actual discussion. Entertaining due to the strangeness, though. Thanks for that. :D
