I'm getting the idea that "bland," "flavorless," and "boring" track with "less magical" an awful lot.  The scout is at least as distinctive a concept as any other D&D "nonmagical" class – of which there are very very few, of course.  Fighter and rogue are basic, of course.  Scout is about as good as barbarian, I think.  Barbarian is stronger, of course, but kind of problematic.    Overall, not a bad level to be at.  None of the other non-core nonmagical classes come close.
