[non d20] Buffy RPG

It's a nice, simple rules game. When I first got the book I figured I'd never actually play the game, but the production value is so high I don't think I would have minded. However, I have been able to run a frined through a solo game and we've both enjoyed it a lot. There are a few books out for it, all of them very well done. Slayers Handbook takes a very close look at the Slayer and also offers some new playing scenerios. Monster Smackdown is pretty much all of the monsters ever seen in the series through season six. And the Directors screen is also well done with a very nice adventure and advice for the Director.

So, anyone else give this game a shot? Thoughts?

I'll be buying the game even if I don't run it anytime in the near future as I'm sure people who've watched the series would at least be interested in trying the game out once or twice.

That and I like Eden Studios.

While I haven't played Buffy, a good friend of mine is curently runing a Buffy campaign and having a great time with it. As I'm currently catching up on the series (only 2 seasons to go!), I'm waiting to finish watching the rest of the episodes so I don't spoil anything for myself then I am going to pick it up. From the way Tim & his players have talked about the game, it sounds really easy to pick up, is great for one-shots or campaigns, and is very true to the spirit of the show.

I just finished watching Season 2 on DVD (I've watched other seasons on TV on and off). Even though I normally rail against games based on television or movies, such as Star Wars, I'm seriously considering playing with this system. One of my lady friends has the books and has a desire to run something for tabletop, so this may very well be the way to go.

The system is a revised version of All Flesh Must Be Eaten, right?

I have a copy of the rules but dont like them very much. Specifically character creation. It might just be me, but i have a hard time reading rule books that differ from the canon material of show itself (ex. how weak Buffy is compared to Angel, WTH).

I was thinking it would be more fun to set the game in a d20 modern world with some arcane additions. Something like Urban Arcana with some tweaked classes. Throw in new Slayer, Vampire, and Bringer templates and you are almost finished. I imagine setting up a Wolfram & Hart or Initiative would be easy with those rules.

My wife just bought me a copy of this book and I really like it. I don't know if I'll be using the full game, but I'm definitely going to convert the magic rules to use in place of the D&D magic in D20 Modern...

I play in a weekly game. Maybe it helps that we're all fans, but it's a blast. The system - a streamlined version of Eden's Unisystem - and the book itself do a great job of capturing the flavor of the series instead of just replicating the series. Our campaign takes place in Chicago, has no slayer or wathcer, but feels like Buffy.

Eden did such a great job with the game, I can't wait to see what they do with Army of Darkness.

Later,
Matt

Don't watch them too quick! I was in the same position about 6 months ago, and went through all the seasons in a month or two (they show two a day on FX); now that I'm in the position of having to wait a week (or two or three) in-between new episodes I can't stand it!

I like the RPG a lot too. Haven't played it yet but the book is well done and the system is slick. This is one I'd definitely rather play in than run, for the sheer fun of it.

I bought it due to its excellent production values (Vassilikos) and amusing tone (Carella). Still unsure if I'll actually run it - I have a bit of a psychological problem with Drama Points, which forcibly remind me this is a simulation of a TV show rather than an immersive reality. Taken literally, no character with 1 or more DP (ie almost everyone) can never die, since the rules say a character can always spend DP to be resurrected, and if you don't have enough, don't worry! You can pay them back later! If I did run it, this rule at least would require severe modification...
