Non-Jedi and lightsabers

Does anyone else think maybe a non-jedi could learn to use a lightsaber. Because in the book about the Kaiburr crystal Leia a non-jedi not only uses a lightsaber but hold off and wound Darth Vader. So I think that maybe some non-jedi should be able to effectively uses lightsabers.

Hey, it's your game, so if you want to, sure.

But I think that there should be some sort of story behind it, and not just "my PC picks up a lightsaber, never using one before, works wonders with it." More like a, "I found this thing when I was a kid. I've been practicing with it for 30 years" type thing.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that lightsabers were weapons of the nobility before the Jedi started using them. (Don't recall where I read that, though. Don't you just it when that happens.)

Per the rules in the game you sure can with the exotic weapon feat. They won't get any extra damage or even be able to defelct blaster bolts though.

Pretty much what Dagger Said.

A non-jedi using a lightsaber could do so with just a Exotic Weapon Prof, but his damage dice would remain 2d8, he couldn't deflect blaster bolts, he couldn't take Lightsaber defense (unless he was force adept, I guess) and he would be calling himself out in whatever period of time he was in. (PT: the jedi would discourage him from flaunting it openly; OT: He'd be hunted; NJO: Probably get away with it, or be recruited by Luke, or be hunted by the Vong).

On the other hand, it DOES go through any DR, which is more useful than it seems.

In the old d6 Star Wars game, you always ran a risk of injuring yourself with a lightsaber. The concept of a weightless blade makes it dangerous to the wielder without training. Because of that, I probably wouldn't let someone teach themself how to use a 'saber, but if they had a background reason for training they could pick up the feat.

So I take it there is no rule that says non-jedi can't use lightsaber because if they can't my bounty hunter character who uses a dark jedi's lightsaber the same lightsaber that killed his father. To hunt down and kill his prey until he finds that dark jedi.

If he just picked up the lightsaber, then I'd say that he has to work with it for a level or two before he can pick up the ewp-lightsaber, unless he already has it.

There's no rule against it. It works just like any other exotic weapon, i.e. -4 w/o feat, no penalty with feat. No special training time or anything like that, unless it's also in effect for other weapons in your campaign.
