Nostalgia for Our Magazines

I started with Dragon #32. The old Hell articles, Pages for Mages, and Ecology of... articles all changed the shape of D&D for the better I feel. I think that Dragon was about to do it again with the Demonimicon and Beleif articles they were printing now.

Jeff Swycaffer's "Exonidas Spaceport" is a great adventure/setting, and that Jim Holloway cover is among my favorites.

I think my first issue was #68. The cloistered cleric issue. I always enjoyed Leomund's Tiny Hut. Gary's From the Sorcerer's Scroll. Wormy. What's new. & the rest of Dragon Mirth. ("...violators will be TOAD"; "Are you basic or advanced?") The letters & forum. The ads. Reviews of other company's games. Reviews of computer games. Articles for use with other company's games. Articles about board & war games. The Apirl Fools issues. Dwamij's Instant Death. Greenwood's examples of magic items with history. The chess covers. The article on building Anglo-Saxon names. Great Stoney.

The Best of Dragon volumes.

The shock of Gary's departure.

When I go back & look at some of the early issues, I'm always surprised by the names of some of the authors.

Although I have written my opinion of the Poly/Dungeon combined era, I loved the d20 minigames in each issue. Too bad they never got played. (Maybe someday.)

Dragon reader since #44, and I have many positive memories of it:

I loved the occasional piece of fiction.

I loved the cartoons- What's New? Fineous Fingers. Wormy. Zogonia. Nodwick. So many others...

I loved the Tom Wham games.

I loved the minis reviews.

I loved the official content that expanded my horizons.

Dungeon I came to later- only after 3Ed was published.

However, I loved their conversions of Spelljammer and other defunct settings, and all of those other-genre D20 games they published in Polyhedron.

A while back, someone had started an issue-by-issue thread discussing the contents of every Dragon from #1 forward, with commentary on various interesting things. It covered the first 2-3 years, just when things were getting good... the thread got lost forever in that forum crash :( Suddenly I wish it was still around. Can I be nostalgic for that? :heh:

That one can be found Here

Yeah, I love those too. I hope Glyfair keeps going on them.

I had one of those Deck of Many Things too.

I remember Planet Busters - one of the Tom Wham games. Played it for hours with my older brother.

I remember the article (but not the issue) that had rules for creating your own flying ship. Needed dragon bits as I recall. Great stuff.

Oh yeah, Voyage of the Princess Ark was a bloody great series even if I didn't play in Mystara.

Hey, what was that comic before Nodwick? Same artist, but earlier series. I kinda liked it.

As far as being inspired by Dragon, well, the last three years have been incredible with Erik Mona at the helm. Some incredibly inspiring stuff - Demonomicon, Core Faiths - great stuff. Heck, he turned me onto China Mieville and Robin Hobbs. For that, thanks.
