Nostalgia for Our Magazines

I liked the humor, from the comic strips, to the odd magical items, to Bard on the Run.

I remember around issues 185 - 190, there were some great articles on Dark Sun weapons, and adapting Oriental Adventures to 2e. Plus a cool article in there somewhere on the various Rakasta subspecies.

My personal favourite was my first - I can't dig up the number right now, but the cover had a guy on a horse in the middle of a forest. He was carrying a torch and riding like hell. I think it may have been #210 or #220. I bought a lot of issues around then - there was agreat 2e ruleset for running chase scenes that I used until I converted to 3e (and for a while, I wanted to convert those rules...)

I also have an issue of DUNGEON #6 (or maybe #3) that had an oriental adventures module in it, as well as an "all-thieves" adventure that I remember running (and we had a ball!).

The DARK SUN DRAGON (it had a picture of a gladiator in the front) is still in my original DS boxed set, which is reserved for all the important Dark Sun "references" - which shows how I viewed DRAGON articles as the best extension of the game.

Edit - You know, my favourite isn't any of those, actually. It's the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth issues of the Savage Tide, in DUNGEON. Those articles have changed how I play the game.

Dragon and Play-Doh

I don't remember the issue, but way back when, Dragon published an article on wargaming with Play-Doh. (It was probably an April issue, but we didn't care.) They had rules for grabbing a couple of cans of Play-Doh, putting together a combatant, and then using any handy table for the battlefield.

One of my favorites was an attack or special power that allowed you to pick up an opponents creature and drop it onto the table.

Now I've got to go dig that article up off the Dragon CDs.

These two issues stick out in my mind more than probably any other:

"Creature of the Rhyll", a BD&D adventure in an early Dragon, was my introduction to Dragon & D&D.

I need to break out my archive and look that adventure up. *sniff*

I used to really enjoy the adventures (pre-Dungeon, of course), and the Ecology articles (before they became the current bland mechanics-heavy format, that is).

I only bought a couple of dozen Dragon magazines (in the late 80's when it covered multiple games, and when 3e had just come out), but I used to love the TSR UK magazine Imagine. Each issue developed the campaign world of Pelor, usually with an article at the level of world, country and city each. I had great fun running a campaign set there and I was very upset when that was cancelled in the mid 80's after about 30 issues.

I could be mad at the apathy here...but hey what the hell. I don't need bad karma right now. So whatever you guys say...I'll just pretend it's what I want to hear. :p ;)
