Not exactly the smartest move...

A friend of mine got canned from work the other day. He is a good guy but wasn't exactly the best of employees. He had screwed up big a couple of times but what finally got him canned was so outrageous that I had to post it.

It took some digging but I was finally able to find out what happened. Basically the guy pulled a no-show... he simply didn't show up for his scheduled shift. But it gets better.

After leaving the rest of the staff who were scheduled that day holding the bag, the guy then shows up at the company Christmas party. Did I mention that the party was on the same Saturday?

Yes folks, the guy screwed off from work to go to the party, where the general manager, divisional manager, and most of the office staff were in attendance.

I had to share that.

Reminds me of Office Space.

"I'm going to stop going to work."
"So you're quitting?"
"No, I'm just not going to to any more."

A guy I used to work with did something similar, although he didn't get fired for it.

There was a group of us from work that were going to the soccer on a Friday night. The stadium is close to the city and it was summer so we were going to walk to the game from work, taking a few drinks to have on the way. I was on holidays at the time so I met the guys at the pub near the stadium before the game.

When I got to the pub this guy was pretty drunk. The first thing he tells me when I saw him was, "Guess what, I pulled a sickie today." Ok. Not exactly the smartest move because:

1. We all worked with him
2. The place where I live seems to have 2 degrees of separation, despite being a relatively big city
3. My boss was also meeting us at the pub before the game! Sure he was on holidays too at the time but it didn't take him long to figure out what had happened since he had to sign his sick leave form.

What was even worse was he had done something similar before. He live in an apartment in the city only about 5-10 minutes from work. Twice before he called in sick and got caught out when my manager spotted him out and about at lunch time. What an idiot!

Unfortunately it is a public service position so you have to do something pretty bad to get fired. He did get in a lot of trouble for it and his holiday pay docked to make up for the "sick leave" though. I'm just glad I don't have to work with this guy anymore. Calling him an idiot would be putting it kindly. A PhD doesn't always guarantee intelligence I guess.

You know its funny. I once called in sick and actually was sick. Thing is my boss didn't believe me, so he came over to my house. He saw what bad shape I was in and apologized for any inconvenience.

Think of all the non-sick "sick" days that must have given you the freedom to take. After getting caught out the first time I don't think he'd show up to your house to check again!

I must admit that I try and sound a little sicker than I am when I call in sick, even though I am legitimately sick. I don't know why. Perhaps it is because when I am sick it is normally from asthma/cough/cold that makes me cough and cough until I am physically sick. It is normally ok during the day and I sound relatively well.
