Now Is This A Promise?

This. In legal terms it's called consideration. You haven't given them anything yet so there's no way to hold them to what they say. Once there's a contract (subscription), then yes it's a "promise". Not that you'll really have any recourse, other than cancelling your subscription, if they fail to deliver.

I called and complained when my cable modem was out for a few hours. I got compensated for the time. It only amounted to like 4 cents but hey! :)

Also aside from canceling, you can report them to the better business bureau. Not sure how much that really does but.

Eh? I don't call anything a promise until someone says "I promise." It sucks when people double back on their word or when things just plain don't get done on time, but promises are very specific and very forceful things. Assuming them makes an ass out of you and... well, mostly you. :p

Yes, of course there are things you can do. But like you say, how much do these things really do, and are they worth the time and effort?

As for the cable thing, that's probably part of your contract with them. That's why it pays to read things before agreeing to them. Like the DDI subscription.

Until they ask me for money, they can say whatever they like. When they say 'it's ready, and this is what it has' or 'give me money now and I will deliver this later', that's the stuff they need to deliver on.

Up until then, it's the same thing as teaser trailers for movies and video games. It may look cool, but there's nothing saying it will definitely be in the finished product. And hearing that they plan to include it doesn't cost me anything. Once they sell me something (ie, I give them money), they have to deliver it.

Dude, its a company selling a product. Quit acting like its your good-fer-nuthin' husband makin' up stories about when he's gonna to get home from the pub.

When subscription services go up, I expect there will be something telling us what's available. On that date, I'll decide whether I want to subscribe. Simple as that.

You know, there seems to have been a time in my life time when people said they were going to deliver something by a specific time, etc... they were actually expected to do so, whether they said "I promise" or not, whether they signed a contract, or not.

Personally I like to hold people to a high standard. I like to expect a high standard to be met and given. I guess I am too old fashioned.

So, yes, I consider it a promise. One that better be delivered, or I will cancel, and keep it cancelled. Its not critical to have for gaming goodness, its just nice bonus material. So if the promises are not kept and the service sucks, I can definitely do without. I'll put the money towards a good Paizo or Goodman module/product instead.
