But for me, having the same NPC walking with the party all the time just doesn't work, so I decided not to use them. A variant that I used, that worked well for me was that I had an NPC who knew the party and the party knew him, this was because they were together for about 5 sessions or so, and later in the campaign they keep encountering this person, which (ofcourse) fitted into the ongoing story.
