NWN minimum system requirements

The readme.txt file of NWN says that the game requires a 16 MB TNT2-class OpenGL 1.2 compliant video card. I'm just curious, but what video cards do you guys use, and how much did you pay for them? Also, from the fact that I am almost completely computer illiterate, is there a way to download video cards or drivers, or do I just need to buy a whole new one?

Well, you may be able to download the latest driver for the card you have, but if the card itself is not up to speed, then your only recourse is to buy a new one and install it.

Do you know what type of card you have? You can get a TNT2 32MB card for $32 at www.pricewatch.com. However, if I were going to buy a new video card, I would spend a little more to get a GeForce3. That way you won't have to upgrade again anytime soon.

You can get a GeForce3 TI 200 for $94 at the same site mentioned above. It has the same chip as the more expensive Geforce3, it is just underclocked. You can buy the cheaper card and get a file called coolbits.reg and overclock the card to the same speed as a GeForce3.

I loaded the game onto my Celeron 300 with 256 megs of RAM. I have an NVidia card with 16 megs of ram (I think).

The intro was curiously slow, and had a stop-and-go-effect to it, which was amazingly annoying.

The game itself seems to be running ok, but I haven't done anything very intense in it yet (haven't left the compound).

I've got a new system on order, so this is just temporary.

I´m going to buy a new graphics card for NWN. I have a TNT 2 now.
I think a GeForce 4 MX 440 will fit nicely.....

Anyone else upgrading their computer just to play NWN?

Don't buy a Geforce4 MX 440! It is just a beefed up Geforce2! It is not a true GeForce4. For the same price you can get a GeForce3, which is a much better card.

But what do I know, it´s all quite confusing...

Then again, my computer is only a PIII 666 so I don´t know how much graphics power I could use?

Yes, but, you can overclock the TI200 within the Display Properties of the card. I bumped my TI200 to the same clock and memory speeds as the GeForce3. It is now a GeForce3. Plus, the GeForce3 has many features in the chip that the GeForce4 MX 440 does not have.

If you play Morrowind you will see that the water looks photo-realistic on a GeForce3 and not so great on anything lower. That is because of a feature called pixel-shading. Also, if you want to play Doom3, you will have to have the chipset features of a Geforce3 or higher. You get much better value with a GeForce3. The MX series are a budget card series, don’t be fooled by the marketing scam of calling it a GeForce4. Currently, real GeForce4 cards cost around $300.00

I bought a GeForce 4 something-or-other last night just to play NWN (not to mention 128 more RAM). I thought I was being all sexycool getting my card for $89 at Best Buy -- but now you're telling me that I probably bought a GeForce2 under a scammy name.

Dammit!

(Anyway, the game still plays brilliantly, and it's fun, so I shouldn't complain too much)

Don't feel bad. It is not a bad card by any means. It's just that Nvidia scams people into believing that they are getting a GeForce4 when they are getting an upgraded GeForce2.
