What's the explanation for this "Simbul's Synistodweomer"?

not sure about 3e, but in 2e you basically burned your spells for healing ... it was a 7th lvl spell IIRC, you'd get 2hp for every lvl of spells burned ...

in order to heal 14hp of damage you'd have to burn 7 1st lvl spells or something like that.

Actually, I meant in-game... was there any eason given for why wizards can't usually gheal or are so bad at healing when they do?

Sure, and while we're at it, why not just let wizards turn undead, too...I mean, seriously, the whole thought process behind classes is that nobody does everythig, and very few people should be able to do a couple of the things...if you want an arcane spellcaster who can cast healing spells, go with a bard...if you want and arcane spellcaster who can gain all the possible benefits of arcane spellcasting (specialization, summon familiar, bonus feats, etc) and be able to cast healing spells, then multi-class...but creating a character who can be a 20th level wizard with (major) healing abilities is just silly...i mean, why not just buy a jug of endless healing potions? or that sumoning creatures with healing abilities trick works well, too...hell, when it comes right down to it, start your arcane spellcaster as a rogue and use all his initial skill points in User Magic Device so that he can use healing wands or clerical staves or rods...there are so many simpe solutions to your dilemma that it seems a travesty to wiggle your way past the intent of the division.

What I always say when a player suggests a new rule for his/her character:

If you can do it, so can the NPC's; is that what you really want?

tootin my own horn here

yes there are many simple solutions ... but I think the goal is to solve them the way a wizard would, with out giving up any lvls.

well at least that was my goal. When I was hashing out the arcane healing spells I wanted them to be kinda on the weak side while at the same time not stepping on the cleric's toes.

there is also the point that you make: We want our cake and the ability to eat too :)

use magic device: I hadn't even thought of that one. There is the difficulty that if you only take 1 lvl in rogue the most skill points you can have in that skill is 4 (not very good for DC 20 items). A good ability and skill focus should help (bring it up to +10 with an 18 ability).

Other than that the DMG, page 95, under Creating New Spells says: 'Wizards and sorcerers should not cast healing spells...', you mean.

Balance issue, and flavor issue, I guess.

Accually it depends on what your total character level is, a sor5 picking up one level of rog could spend 9 ranks in use magic device. It would take all or nearly all your skill point at that level but you gain sneak attack damage with spells that have a to hit roll.

This discussion is over 2 years old, and still 3.0.

Use magic device was an exclusive skill in 3.0, unlike in 3.5, so Wolf72 was right.

It's hard for me to sympathize with clerics losing some of their shtick, since they pretty much steal every other classes' shtick themselves. ;)
