Nyaricus Presents: Faerun With Less Baggage [an ongoing project]

Nyaricus

First Post
So, I've for whatever reason become inspired to start up this thread. I do this because I want to show you that FR can be a blast, and that, no, you don't need everything and the kitchen sink to have a good FR game :)

I suppose you could say that this project began with a thread which was about having few deities in Faerun (which is one of the baggage-y areas of FR, though not the sole one). I went in and shaved off TONS of un-needed gods and godesses - less than 30 human gods once I was done. But then I got the idea just to file off more of the unneeded serial numbers. Races, subraces, monsters, etc. So, I'll be going through everything that I can and presenting to you fine folks what my findings are. This will take awhile, mind you, but bear with me :)

cheers,

So it doesn't look like this went anywhere, did it? You have all the notes on your computer, or was this just an idea that you had in your head but never went anywhere with?

lol, I had actually half-forgotten about this thread...

It was more an idea in my head I didn't go anywhere with, though my essay about paring down the gods and goddess list from 100+ to 30+racial deities (which I didn't deal with) is still kicking around EN World in one incantation or another, and might still be worth re-posting in this thread.

[sblock]BTW DM, how's it going, and what's new? I haven't seen you around much lately, thought you're now 300 posts ahead of me! I've been busy finishing up an extra half year in highschool, however (and now that that's down, working full-time) so that might be it, too[/sblock]

cheers,

Actually, my homebrewn world's known history of the deities is that once there were all sorts of types of deities [essentially FR, though I suppose you could also add the numerous deities in the misc. sourcebooks] and then there's a war which called all but three of them. The main Deity is slowly rebuilding a pantheon [of which it consists of about 5 total deities, atm]. Unlike before, a Deity is the Deity for ALL races, just that each race views the Deity in their own image.

I've always liked the idea of Deities and while I know many of the FR ones, I always thought there were a few too many.

I'm doing pretty good atm. For a short time, I was addicted to a couple of threads like the Hivemind and a couple others which had been assimilated by the same folks and was racking up like 20 or so posts per day, but now I'm down to like 3 or so.

I'm working full-time too. I keep meaning to work on getting a car, but haven't gotten around to actually getting my license yet. It's only open during when I work and I'm too far behind on work that it hasn't really been much of an option to leave early or go in late. [Even have to go in occasionally on the weekends, which is really annoying, though I do get overtime, at least].

Just curious Ny,

Are Archfiends actually on par with the Faerunian gods or not in your book? Like can they grant spells for starters...

Well, I suppose that depends...

We have some that blur the lines: Orcus, that corruption devil guy [name starts with "G" I think], and a couple others, likely.

However, IMO, Gods, fiends and angels are all on seperate levels. While gods are evocative and representative of a given races psyche and ideals, fiends and angels are on a whole other level. They want something which is on a different level than what the gods want. Angels and their contemporaries wish to see humans et al illuimated and basking in the realization of the light that they offer, while fiends wish to see mortals seduced to the dark side; to be corrupted. Deities however are forces that reflect some given truth far beyond the scope of such petty dealings, and while it's true that some deities hold sway over some niche aspect of life, that deities' relative "insignifigance" is therefore represented by his small following of active worshippers.

Now, some mortals and some angels/fiends might very well unlock the secrets of godhood, but they are obviously not an accurate representation of humanity; they are the exception.

So, yeah, there's my POV, as it stands :p

Gargauth is the former archfiend's name.

Reason I ask is the wildly varying abilities of the gods VERSUS Archfiends. Just saying that if gods aren't on par (some anyway) with Archfiends in their respective places, why do some novels play them as "pawns." instead.

But yeah Orcus deserves his time in the sun. Or godhood. ;)

Well if you focus your FR campaign on one specific region that solves a lot of problems. All the gods aren't worshiped everywhere and each region usually only whorships a dozen or so of the gods.

When I ran my 3 year long FR campaign, the whole thing took place in the Vilhon Reach. It was one of my best campaigns, only had to deal with a handful of the gods, no major uber-npc's to deal with except for the Emerald Enclave (which are really borderline villians). It was the most managable FR campaing I had ever delt with.
