Oathbound - an overlooked setting?

I have all the Oathbound books and have been itching to find a party that I could DM into the forge. I may have to do a PbEM or PbP game. :)

I like the mid-high level aspect, though lately I have been DMing a Midnight game (which I also love...)

Good to see you too. I haven't played it in a while, but I would enjoy any opportunity to further contemplate the glory that is the Ceptu.

Heh! When we played Oathbound, our GM told us not to read the setting books... When my PC first saw a ceptu, and the GM described it, I told him "I think a greeting to it." He asked me "You haven't been reading the setting books, have you?" :D

No, I told him, but with no mouths with which to speak, it seemed pretty obvious (to me) that they had to be telepathic, or have some form of neural link... He basically said "Good guess!" :p

I always thought it was an interesting setting. There were some neat concepts in the main book and supplements.

I picked up most of the OB books at the Christmas sale. I keep toying with running the game, as the last game I ran was Shadowrun, and Penance seems a perfect setting for that type of game.

Then I run across the calendar, with its bizarre short seasons, and all of the science classes I've had bring my interest to a screeching halt. I think the calendar and the wonky side effects is the thing I would most like to see gone from an updated version, even more so than the art that seems to try to make it feel like a horror-genre game.

I am actually not sure I'm looking forward to a different mechanic for the prestige races. Asking any of the spellcasters to take levels in something that doesn't advance their caster level, unless it has very significant other benefits, just never works around here.

Well, the calendar is very easily ignored. I mentioned it at the beginning of my campaign, and then promptly forgot about it, so it hasn't come up again. There's no reason you couldn't substitute some other calendar. Like any other campaign setting, there are things that not everyone will enjoy or approve of; it's the DM's perogative to remove or change those things. All in all, the calendar is a very minor part of the setting and could be removed entirely with no impact on the world whatsoever.

So have you played or run it?

No, I have not. I said I would have.

There are plenty of games I would like to run... but with only one game a week.

In fact, that is part of why I plan pick up games at gencon -- to run games/setting I normally don't get to.
