Obscure Greyhawk deities: Kurell and Johydee

Hypersmurf

Moderatarrrrh...
I'm having trouble finding any useful information about these two.

Lots and lots of references to Johydee's Mask - in artifact and CCG form, as far as I can tell - but very little about the goddess.

A couple of notes about Kurell being 'the Thief-Prince', and that's about it.

Anyone have any useful links or writeups?

I've got domains, alignment, favoured weapon... but nothing to give me a feel for them.

Hiya,

I don't remember everything, but here you go

Kurell is a minor god of thieves, and has a following in Greyhawk City. His cult is trying to seize influence in the Thieves Guild, but is still low key
(City of Greyhawk box)

Johydee was a high priestess from an unknown cult of truth and justice. Her country was beset by vicious thieves. An hermit mad a mask for her, allowing her to impersonate the leader of the thieves and have them war among themselves. (Book of artifacts 2nd ed)

The Organisation of the Jade Mask (not sure exact name) of iron League spies is dedicated to her (there was an article in Dragon).

anyone else to fill the blanks?

Well, I'm at work so no access to books, but I believe that the LGJ (back when it was a seperate magazine) covered these in it's article about 'hero-deities'. I'm positive about Johydee, not so much about Kurell.

I'll post more when I get home this afternoon.

I'll get my info for you...

"Desires must be seized, for experiencing the act of taking brings joy. Suffering must be avenged, for only retribution alleviates loss. Those that have wealth but do not deserve it, not the power and luck that brought them to where they are, and for that they should be scorned. You must take what is rightfully yours when the time is right or forever be shackled to misery, poverty, and nothingness."

Their ceremonial robes are green, their ceremonies frequently involve large braziers of fire representing the burning of jealosy and for revenge. The Power often instructs that prominent relics of other churches and objects of art be stolen and offered to him. This makes them not trusted by clerics of other deities--only in the greatest of dire straits would another cleric co-operate with a cleric of Kurell. Most of his worshippers are thieves.

Thats the basic details and I would give you the URL I got it from but I lost the link somewhere...

Sorry, no help with Johydee.

Cool - Kurell is more important than Johydee, anyway, I think. The player was choosing a deity based on portfolio, and Kurell caught his eye, with Johydee as an alternate possibility.

Thanks :)

Edit - for some reason, I'm tempted to rename him Kur'rel, and make him Kryptonian... :)

I flicked the Kurell info to the player in an email, and just got a response back:

"Dunno about you, but he sounds COOL!!!"

So I guess that works for him :)

Back a few years ago before 3E was released, (at least I think), Dragon magazine had 3 or 4 articles on Greyhawk gods, Kurell being one of them, (along with Sotillon if that helps, she's the only other god I remember being described).

Kurell is a god of thieves, particularly those who are jealous. If I could find my 2E Greyhawk reborn stuff, I'd list his porfolio, alignment and stuff. I do believe he is a demi or lesser god.

Kurell is not a very nice kind of god. He's known as The Bitter Hand, the Scorned Heart, the Vengeful Knave. He's the lesser god of Jealousy, Revenge, and Theft. He tried to put the moves on his brother Zilchus's wife Sotillion (one of the seasonal wind goddesses) but failed and is consumed with jealousy. He's not the most popular of rogue gods and that makes him more jealous still.
There's a description of him and most other Greyhawk gods in the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer, a very useful tome for anyone interested in running GH. It doesn't have a write-up on Johydee, but I think she qualifies as a hero- or demi-god like Heward, Muryland, and Keoghtum.

Kurell is written up in the Greyhawk Gazetteer, pg 174 - I can post some info from it if you would like.

There doesn't seem to be much info on Johydee except the following: A Prestige Class in Dragon 302: Mask of Johydee.

A mention of Johydee's Children in Ivid the Undying which can be found at http://www.canonfire.com/htmlnew/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=1

A mention in a deific summary of Greyhawk Gods at http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/tamerlain/Greyhawk/GreyGods.html
or http://www.theocracyofthepale.com/downloads/lg_deities.pdf

A few mentions of her in the Greyhawk History at http://members.ozemail.com.au/~goran/History.htm

Thats about all I can find easily

Ok, there's stuff about Johydee from LGJ #3, p11.

Johydee (The Hidden Empress). NG Hero-Goddess of Deception, Espionage and Protection. She's an Oriedian priestess (it's not known of who) from before the time of the Twin Cataclysms. She over threw the hold of worshippers of evil deities over her people.

Basically she's about deception in the name of good - spying in order to bring down evil, misleading so that good can win the day, etc. Her sacred animal is the cameleon, and her clerics like to pretend they are different than they are.

I can write up more if you want it.
