Obscure Greyhawk deities: Kurell and Johydee

Oddly enough, I just answered a similar query on Johydee on the WotC GH boards. The article with details on both hero gods was "The Blood of Heroes" in Living Greyhawk Journal #3 (Feb 2001).

Back a few years ago before 3E was released, (at least I think), Dragon magazine had 3 or 4 articles on Greyhawk gods, Kurell being one of them, (along with Sotillon if that helps, she's the only other god I remember being described).

Hmm... pre-250? Might be in my CD Archive, then... I'll take a look!

Kurell is a god of thieves, particularly those who are jealous. If I could find my 2E Greyhawk reborn stuff, I'd list his porfolio, alignment and stuff. I do believe he is a demi or lesser god.

Yeah, that's about all I could find :) There are numerous listings of gods with portfolio and alignment, and not much else; much harder to find anything deeper than that, though :)

Abraxas, billd91, Olive - thanks :)

That's probably all I need on Johydee, thanks, Olive - looks like the player's quite fond of what he's seen so far on Kurell :)

If it helps, I think the issue has a picture of Apollo or an Adonis like god on the cover, holding a short sword or more likely gladius. Also, their is an article on Dark Ages DnD, with rules on old weapons and clerics of "god" or something like that. But now that I'm thinking of it, that cover I think is the Dragon that has Tharizdun, Pholtus and a couple other Greyhawk deities in 3E terms.

Edit - for some reason, I'm tempted to rename him Kur'rel, and make him Kryptonian... :)

Of course, you could also name him Curel, and make him the God of Moisture and Smooth Faces...

Are you thinking of issue 294, with D&Dg writeups for Iuz, Tharizdun, Rao and Pholtus? That ahs a cover like you'e thinking of.

The red sails issue was around the same time.

Bingo. That is a different issue than those with Kurell, Sotillion and the other gods described.

I just looked through a pile of books and mags that was easy to find and the two latest issues of Dragon was 248 (I've never had a subscription, just picked up those I wanted). 248 had the "What the Hell is a Baatezu?" ad campaign on the back cover, so the Dragon's I'm thinking of come after that.

Looking at the list grodog provided, I'm going to guess the issues are around the 263 and 264 numbers.

I do remember a bit more about the Dark Ages articles. They provided stats for the Scramasax sword and the cleric was "of man", not some mythological deity. If that helps.

Dragon #263, with a Egyptian god/pharoah-looking guy on the cover. Kurell is on pp.50-52.

God of jealousy, revenge, thievery, with a single green eye for a symbol. His allies are Syrul, Erythnul, & Xan Yae (an, uh, interesting group); his only listed foe is Pholtus.

Dogma: "Followers of Kurell believe they have a right to whatever they want. These same folks jealously guard what they believe to be theirs and punish those who try to take it from them. Along the same line of thinking, many believe that seeking retribution for wrongs is more important and more likely to end 'correctly' if they do it themselves rather than allowing courts or government to interfere. Oddly enough, though the followers of the church and the clergy trust no one, they are often trustworthy. This is simply because they don't want revenge practiced against them."

The whole piece on him & his clergy is almost two full three-column pages, once you ignore art & ads.
