[OC8] Issue #1: Opening Day

Tuesday, March 25th, 2003
Anaheim, California

Brandon just about jumps out of his shoes as NE1 transforms before his eyes. "Well, heck, that's something you don't see everyday." Brandon says. I've got to figure out some way to tell its him . . . I wonder if he gives off a certain heat signature . . .

"Well, let's go find a security guard not named NE1 to be sure its okay for us to look around. Is there something other than NE1 I can call you while we're looking around . . .something not Brandon?"

Once inside, Anh could see that the office was filled with all manner of strange...things on the shelves and most other available space, although most everything did seem to be in a neat and tidy order. The device on the desk groaned in protest as Dr. Harrison bent over it and started flipping switches. He looked up and glanced over at the sound of her giggles, though.

"Ah, is everything alright, Ms. Nguyen?" the professor wondered with a friendly smile. "I don't have something stuck to my back, do I?"

Anh's cheeks turned a vibrant pink. "Uh...uh...," and using that for a perfect excuse to give him the complete once over...quite complete...she answered him in a low whisper. "Oh no...nothing wrong with your backsi-..er back at all, Dr. Harrison."

Brushing a lock of hair from her burning face she attempted a weak smile and a jab at changing the subject. "Uh...what is that device? Is it going to help us research?"

"It'll have to do then. Could you have somebody attach it to the back of my armor?"
Jonathan takes a look around, seeing what is going on in the labs.

"This?" Dr. Harrison wondered, resting his hand on the device after turning it completely off and straightening. "Oh no, this is for simulating matter composition of the early universe. It still needs some fine tuning."

"So," he went on, grabbing his jacket and flipping off the lights as he waved Anh towards the door. "Shall we head to the library?"

Anh nodded, slipping her backpack over her shoulder and heading out with Dr. Harrison. "Where should we start researching? What are we looking for exactly?" she asked as they headed to the university library, basking in the glory of being with her idol. Was everybody looking? She hoped they all were.

Her life here at the university had been quiet so far, despite her famous parents and her heritage. A few boys had tried to ask her out, but she wasn't sure if they wanted to date mousy her or the famous (and quite famously sexy Lady Dragon as evidence by her scantily clad publicity photos!).

But Dr. Harrison was different! He certainly was...when he looked at her, he didn't see Lady Dragon. Of course...not having him really see her at all wasn't so wonderful either.

Anh trudged along, glancing at the ground periodically, her long black hair swinging to cover her face.

"Well, I'd say cross-referencing the team and stadium with recent news and police reports would be a good way to start. Then we can go from there." The professor glanced over at his student as they made their way towards the university libraries. "Unless you have some ideas of your own? You should speak up in class more often, Ms. Nguyen. Your homeworks show a good grasp of problem solving."

"Uh...yeah...thanks." Wow a compliment every girl craves from her crush she thought sarcastically to herself and then blushed anyway at him complimenting her all in that confusing order. "I...don't have much to say," she confessed, looking more and more embarrassed, quite unable to look at him. At least not much to say when you're around.

"Oh, but sure you do!" he encouraged. "In fact, the TA told me you had some great insights in section the other day. You should share them in class. Anyway, so here we are," he stated the obvious, grasping the library door and holding it open for Anh. "I've blocked off the rest of the day for this, so I think we'll have plenty of time to finish our work."

Anh sighed the moment all those books came rushing at her. Computers, books, research...not exactly how she liked to spend her free afternoons...but at least being with Dr. Harrison made it all worth it. And of all the topics to research, a boring old stadium and an equally boring old game...why would anyone want to disrupt a baseball game?

Personally Anh thought the game had its own super power...the kind of power that made her fall asleep whenever any of her friends had it on the TV.

Parking herself in front of the computer, she began to search for references between the stadium and unexpected events, super criminals, everything else that Dr. Harrison had asked for her to do.
