Oddity I found when looking into EMusic

My recent Netflix DVDs had an advertisement for Emusic, offerent 35 free rentals. I didn't have my info handy so I checked out the website and viola they have a big splash page offering 50 free rentals!

When I finally got the ad, I went back to the website and saw that indeed, they were offering a better deal than Netflix. So, I went to the specific site referenced by the ad (the main site with a "/netflix" added) to see if there were any differences in the offer that would entice me to choose the 35 free rentals rather than 50. When seeing nothing I went back to the main page and discovered that it was now showing 35 free rentals.

Now, I'm pretty sure that by deleting cookies I can get back to the 50 free rentals. Still, this seems like a pretty cheesy thing to do.

Anyone have any idea why this might be a good thing?

Someone stole my credit card number and used it for an emusic subscription. Not that it's their fault, but I don't have a lot of appreciation for them.

Good for who? Good the EMusic certainly, if they don't have to give you 15 more free rentals.
I could see an advantage if the membership with 50 free rentals had a minimum number of months to subscribe, while the 35 didn't, for example.

Still, that's no reason to take away the 50 free rental option.

All that being said, this sort of thing definitely encourages me not to deal with the company. If they do this sort of thing then what other things might they try to pull. I've already seen reports of the company continuing to charge people after they cancel.

Their offers seem to come and go, probably based on how many recent new signups they've had. The original pages are usually still around, though. Google turned up this, which I used a few weeks ago, for 75 songs:

It's not so much that. It's that their main page has a better offer than the one they advertised tied into Netflix. However, one you visit the Netflix page their remove the option for the better offer (of course, it's back when I use another browser to visit the site).

It's sort of like walking into a store with a 15% off coupon. You see they have a 25% off salem but won't give you 25% off because you have a coupon for 15% off.
