Official Tomb of Horrors 3.5 conversion (merged)

Though I cannot say this is absolutely true without performing extensive research, I would say that the "love-hate" relationship would probably be divided by problem solvers-hack and slashers.

I'm gonna say no.

It offends me not in the slightest that they provide saves here. Actually, I consider it a substantial improvement.

I am not a hack-n-slasher. If anything, I am much more a problem solver. My position has nothing to do with my view from the player side of the screen.

I am a DM who never clefted to the philosophy of killer DMing. It's a non-challenge. A DM could kill the PCs at any time. I feel the players faculties are sufficiently challenged be presenting them with risk; no reason to go overboard.

Of players who hate the game, in my various conversations about RttToH (an excellent adventure, which most players don't seem to understand), the type that really recoil at it are characer developers.

I may download it just for the maps.

I was, indeed, referring to the name. (And it wasn't meant as a "crack," simply a comment, and a fairly "jokesy" one at that.)

Besides Keebler's live in trees and make cookies, not adventure. :heh:

Did anyone notice the minor updates that got worked into the conversion?

Basically, Bruce Cordell made sure that this version still kept continuity with the events of Return to the Tomb of Horrors (Notwithstanding that Skull City isn't there), as well as working in a few other things that've changed. The siren in area 22 escaped, and was replaced with a crypt chanter. The reason the demons stay to repair the Tomb is given. And the demilich at the end is explained to be a construct.

I must admit, I absolutely love this (and not just because I love Bruce Cordell's work either). This is showing how an update is more than just changing the mechanics to 3.5E; it's going the extra mile to make sure everything syncs up with previous products, and to make sure things make sense for level balance and playability.

I can't wait to run my group through this.

Right. The demilich in the conversion is a constuct because the real Acererak is in the Negative Energy Plane, awaiting the conclusion of the Return to... module. He puts soul-eating constructs here and there in order to empower his final ritual.

Being a construct means it's immune to clerical turning and rebuking, which makes it slightly more fearsome and surprising to PCs who are expecting something undead.

And it's a nice way of actually being able to throw a demilich at a 9-10th level party and not kill them all with a horrid wilting on round 1. Draws it out a bit more...

Demiurge out.

Mark Jindra (Wizards' webguy) has confirmed that there's another conversion of a classic module coming along at the end of the month. :D

Cheers!

Woot! Oh man, I really hope this is going to become a new trend for WotC's free adventures!

Did you know we found a way to 'cheat' the Tomb of Horrors?
There IS a way through the Tomb of Horrors, without going through ... the Tomb of Horrors.
At least, that was true in the old 1st Edition module!

Of course, then we had to face Acererak, and ... well ... well, at least one of us survived!

Anyone interested in how to get through the Tomb, without going through the Tomb?
If yes, I'll post a Spoiler Warning, and make some commentary on this (Acererak will have my soul if he hears about it, though.)
