OGC Question re: subtypes

Kafkonia

First Post
I was looking through one of the hypertext SRDs, and I saw that while the archon and angel subtypes were listed, the eladrin and guardinal subtypes were not. Now, I know not all online SRDs are created equal, so my question is: are the eladrin and guardinal subtypes not considered OGC? I'm pretty sure the tanar'ri and baatezu aren't, but these caught me by surprise.

My vast fact-checking network shows that "Eladrin" is original, while Archon and Angel are words that have existed for quite a while. (Indisputable proof is available.)

Regardless of the presence of prior copyright, either subtype may or may not be open gaming content. Remember, it's the actual subtypes being inquired about, not the names of the subtypes.

Kafkonia - Your best bet would be to consult the book in which both subtypes are originally found. If the book has no OGL, then nothing within is open gaming content. If the book does have an OGL, check the OGC Declaration to see whether the subtypes (or the part of the book in which they are found) has been declared open gaming content.

Also, you have to be careful when consulting hypertext SRDs. Your best bet is to consult the source: the original SRD .rtf files available from WotC's site.

The book in question is the 3.5e Monster Manual ("core rulebook III").
