[OGCS] What happened to Tempest?

Jürgen Hubert

First Post
Recently I checked back on the Open Game Content Setting Wiki, and I had to see that it's basically dead - there have been no changes for at least the last 30 days.

I know that I was so swamped with work that I wasn't able to do any work for the setting. Is the same true for all the other participants?

A shame about this, really. But it was fun while it lasted...

I'd like to re-awaken this setting - but the last time I checked on Tempest no one but me seem to be adding new material anymore.
However, if we'd find at least one more new active contributor beyond Jürgen and me, then maybe we could get this baby going again...

Maybe we should redraw the map - the current one looks nice for its geographic detail, but not having any political boundaries hurts understanding of the situation.

I propose using Inkscape, an Open Source vector-based program. Vector-based maps are always a good idea since they can be zoomed in or out with a minimum of hassle, and the .svg format of Inkscape can be displayed directly by the Firefox browser.

I've lost interest in contributing to Tempest. (I'm not even a member of the Wiki anymore.) I just don't have the time or the energy to devote to Tempest. Plus, it just seemed like there were too many cooks, and not enough of a recipe.

Started my weekly campaign. Plus, am temporarily unemployed, so instead of working 5 days a week at construction, I'm working 7 days a week on my house.

I've checked back a few times, and was mulling contributing a day or two ago.

Haven't quit; just on sabbatical.

Yair has apparently been drafted (into the army).

It would be nice to have some guidelines in place, even if my preference is "almost anything goes". There are enough "low-magic", low-fun (IMO) campaign settings out there. I'd rather go wild and crazy.

Ouch. I know from personal experience what that can do to your free time... :(

Well, I like the focus on the political intrigue and the shifting to a war footing that I proposed. For each country, the questions arise:

- Where will it stand in the coming war? Will it ally with one of the two side (and if so, how does it feel about its allies), or will it attempt to stay neutral?

- What will it do to gain an advantage in the war? Create special military units? Create or search for magical artifacts that have the power to affect the outcome of battles? Sabotage the enemy?

- How does the population react to this? Or the various political power centers?

The upcoming war and its repercussions become a lens through which the setting can be viewed and make it distinct from other fantasy settings - and it creates the possibility for all sorts of adventures.

Oh, and I wouldn't consider Tempest "low magic". Magic might not be as ubiquiteous as in, say, Eberron, but plenty of it is out there...

Is OK for me. I like a plentitude of races, and that's not ruled out. The whole war/intrigue deal doesn't do anything for me, but that's always been the case and it doesn't hinder me.

The note on magic and magic items did get me thinking, though. We should be clear; Tempest has ruins. Quite a few ruins. Tempest is marked by conflict, and always has been.

I'm a dungeoncrawl DM. ;)

also don't forget that Tempest should have no race-specific deities!

The fact that cool magic items are usually kept by the ruling elite and the military could be a excellent reason for adventurers to comb through the overgrown ruins of ancient castles and fortesses or long-forgotten battle grounds...
