Oh, the joys of the OGL (Unearthed Arcana)

It sounds to me like he's OCRing it -- "substituting meaningless names for their meaningless names" and deleting mind flayers et. al..
Well, not knowing MerricB personally, I think he is doing exactly that ... extracting the text and removing any Product Identity (either deleting them or replace them with something that can be used as OGC). I also think he is also removing any copyrighted and trademarked content (i.e., text, artworks, etc.) that is neither designated OGC nor PI.

[If you didn't, MerricB, consider this a polite reminder.]

Well he basically said so much -- he referenced 2 pieces of closed content he removed and one generic category besides.

As a nitpick, he's not removing copyrighted content -- just the non-OGC content. (All OGC is copyrighted by virtue of the license itself.)

Hehe.

Yes, I am OCRing the text and not including any of the images, page borders or similar items. :)

Just have to say: OCR technology is absolutely amazing. What a great development of technology.

So, what are the irrelevant portions?

"...as defined by the Open Gaming License..." etc. There's a couple of sentences I don't feel like typing out.

If your FLGS has a copy of UA by now, you'll find the definitions on the page with the rest of the credits at the front of the book. There's not much I haven't mentioned. (The title page? I forget the proper name for it).

Cheers!

Alternately, he can replace them with his own PI.;)

Damn! I should have done that! :)

Too late now... I'm afraid the "Masked Maniac" is now OGC! :D

(or not - it might be a trademark I've used improperly... ;))

Cheers!

That's what I mean ... "removing copyrighted content that is neither designated as OGC nor PI." :p

I plan on doing the same thing, but it will have all the campaign information the player's will need to create and maintain their characters within the campaign.
