OK, here's my can o' worms question!

It's simple.

If you have the right GM and the right group of players, any game system can be fun!

I have no allegiance to a single system. I am quite happy to learn new systems, as I think the attempt to come up with "universal" systems is ultimately fruitless. It is better to tailor the rules to the specific needs of the campaign, rather than try to force the campaign into a given set of rules.

I like learning new sets of rules. On my shelves I have a couple dozen systems -- D20, OD&D, Ars Magica, Fading Suns, Unknown Armies, Over the Edge, Star Trek (FASA, ICON, CODA), Agone, Blue Planet, Nobilis, RuneQuest/CoC, HarnMaster, TORG/Bloodshadows/Shatterzone, Paranoia, Changeling, Rolemaster, Traveller, etc.

So, it's all good.

But, of course, I feel the need to get under the hood of any system I am running, tinker with it, and make it fit better into the world I have put together. ;)

I'm not going to say I wouldn't have as much fun with another rules system than 3E, but I really don't want to learn a new system (or try to relearn an old one). Sticking with 3E is fine for me, and so that's all I'll play. I know it and its a good system. No need for anything else at this point in time for me.

I won't say that I'll *only* play 3E D&D/D20/OGL, but it is thus far my favorite, ever.

So, as of so far, yeah - D20 rules them all. But will it forever? It's silly to say that it does or will. I know it's not *perfect.*

I voted that I'd play any RPG, so long as it was fun.

With that said, I definitely prefer some systems over others. I've played Castles & Crusades, and I don't care for it. I'd rather not play 2nd or 1st edition if I can avoid it. I don't care for White Wolf games, and I'm certain that there are a myriad of other game systems that I probably wouldn't like.

If you told me that you had made Old Maid: The RPG, I'd probably play it. I'm a Gaming Addict. My collection has in the past included dozens of RPG's i'd never played, sat on my shelf for reading material, and then dumped when I needed to make room for more RPG's.

I'm in the "if your playing D&D, then play the latest edition" camp. But I'm still playing 3e (not 3.5), but that's mainly an expense issue. As a computer guy, I believe in running the latest software, and RPGs are no exception.

I would not say that D&D is the greatest RPG on the planet. I haven't played them all. I do know there are ones that obviously suck compared to it. But there are plenty that the jury is still out on, and only trying them would lead to a proper ranking.

Dungeons & Dragons [current edition] is the one true game. All previous editions were just attempts to achieve this level of excellence.

OD&D was concept notes.
B/ED&D was alpha.
AD&D1 was beta.
AD&D2 was beta revised.
D&D3 went gold.
D&D3.5 is gold revised.

D&D has reached this stage of excellence due to a 30-year development cycle with expansive play testing.

I would say that, right now, 3E/d20 is one of the best systems for doing certain things. Those certain things are in line with what I want to play right now, so I've stuck with d20 for some time now. If I get in the mood to do a different type of simulation, I'll change games.

I don't think d20 is the end of the line; I don't think any game is or can be that. There will always be something better.

I would like to play a lot more than I do now, but with us having just one game night I'm down to just one system. I read others. I'll probably get the new GURPS rules once a couple more sourcebooks come out. I almost picked up the Warhammer FRPG last night, and I might still get it.

For D&D, I'll only play 3.5. I'm not even sure I'd play in a 3.0 game at this point.

But as far as the d20 system goes, it's far from my favorite but I do enjoy it. d20 is like the English language in some ways. It might not be the prettiest language or make the most sense but it's what most people know.

For other systems, I actually prefer Shadowrun (SR3) to d20.

I love playing different games, but 3e satisfies me in a way other games don't. Dnd has been my favorite hobby literally for years, and so it's the one I'm by far the most familiar with. However, I love trying new games and I love playing other systems from time to time. I think 'my game' will likely always be dnd of some kind, though. :)
