As a player, I would probably be happy to play almost any game -- but only with a good GM. (I would not want to play with a mediocre/bad GM, even if he/she were running my favourite game in my favourite setting.) An interesting story, set in an interesting setting, matters a lot more to me than the system.

As a GM, I am really only interested in running 'rules light' systems these days (e.g. C&C, RC, Buffy/Angel). I just don't have the time for, or interest in, GM'ing 'rules heavy' systems anymore (e.g. 3e D&D, Rolemaster, GURPS). (However, I am tempted by the Conan game...)

I'll play anything, though I've only been exposed to 2e D&D and 3e D&D. The problem comes with the fact that my players are happy with d20 and there's really no point to try and branch out into something different.

That new WFRP is looking pretty sweet though... I might just have to break down and buy it...

I've never been into Warhammer, but I have to admit I'm thinking about it now.

Has anyone else on these boards read KotDT 101? The guest editorial relates heavily to this poll/thread.

As to individual tastes, I realize that. So why do so many gamers talk like they like only one flavor? Give me long enough and I get tired of Strawberry Ice Cream, so then I move on to Chocolate Chip Mint. Then maybe to Rocky Road. Then I'll either go back to Strawberry or give Banana Cream a try for awhile.

In my real life experience, in the last 12 months, I have played L5R, GURPS, and 2E D&D as well as 3E Rokugan and Greyhawk campaigns. I have DMed L5R, Traveller, and Paranoia XP, as well as Two 3E D&D games. One set in the Wilderlands and my current one in Erde.

I voted "other", since I don't like crunchy games in general.
For fantasy, I'm with '81 Basic/Expert D&D all the way (for other stuff, d6 Star Wars and CoC BRP).
Btw, even without feats, Fighters can still do interesting stuff by applying intelligent tactics (a lighter version of AoO exists in B/X D&D) or by using the environment creatively. But the resolution is much more abstract and spontaneous (less crunch).

The thing I love and hate the most about 3E is the complexity.

I love the tactical nature of the combat - but I hate the fact that combat takes so long.

I love the complexity of building high level characters - but I hate the fact that it takes so long to do so.

So, to sum up, I love the system, but I hate the time it takes to enjoy the system.

Unfortunately, the thought of going back to an earlier edition (such as 1E or 2E) or trying a "rules-lite" system like C&C turns me off because I'd miss the detail and complexity. :)

I need to win the Texas lottery so I could stop working and concentrate on D&D.

And this is exactly how I feel. Though I also have problems finding the time and continuity for a long-running character. I think if I ever had time to get my homebrew setting going and/or play one character for a long time I'd really get back into 3.5.

I don't want to learn two hundred and sixty thousand different rules if I can have all bases covered with one or two systems. I play d20/D&D3R almost exclusively (d20 Modern included), and not much else, but I'm also open to World of Darkness (Vampire: The Requiem and so on). Between the two systems, they cover every angle IMO.

If you told me that you had made Old Maid: The RPG, I'd probably play it. I'm a Gaming Addict. My collection has in the past included dozens of RPG's i'd never played, sat on my shelf for reading material, and then dumped when I needed to make room for more RPG's.

Woah, Henry...get out of my head! :) Pretty much the same here. I also have Gamer ADD, which means that I occasionally go through manic bouts of game-switching. Currently, I'm running an Eberron game, a Mutants and Masterminds game and a World of Darkness game (I loves me the World of Darkness) and possibly an occasional Earthdawn game.

I admit that at first I was not real hip on d20/3e. One of the reasons is that I was not doing fantasy gaming at the time and spent my time with Supers games and Call of Cthulhu. Another reason why I was not hip in even trying it at first was because I hated 2e so much that I figured it was just one more big mistake.

Over the years, the more I see how 3e really works for flavor and variety, the more I think it is really the best fantasy game available. I like it for the variation and the amount of options available (that you can take or not take). More importantly, I think the things that are MOST appealing about it are the fact that there is unlimited support and discussion (but that likely has more to do with the proliferation of the internet) and the fact that the books are better written and have convenient Table of Contents and indexes (which was always one of Gygax's biggest problems, despite his excitement and absolute love of the game).

Of course, how controversial would saying '3e is the greatest' on a 3e board? Is it not like preaching to the converted?
