D&D 4E OK OK. A *NOT* negative thread from me re: 4E

edit: oh never mind. Had to use an action point on this last Will save, but I made it. .

And Vigilance, the fact that this thread received only *one* threadcrapper could be seen as a sign that discourse on this forum is moving in the right direction.

Well, that and all the bannings. ;)

Folks,

Threadcrapping is... well, rude and obnoxious. Getting in people's faces about what you think is a threadcrapping is also rude and obnoxious. Either one is an overall negative stimulus to the boards as a whole, and neither supports the open atmosphere of information exchange we desire for these boards. So please, avoid both behaviors, okay?

To JeffB, I apologize for being a "threadcrapper", and I hope you enjoy 4E for many years to come.

To Vigilance. I was really prepared to voice my personal opinions on your comments about being a jerk, but I've changed my mind. The reason I posted my comment here was because I wanted to respond about the one thing I liked about the newest edition. This was the first post I came across that asked for an opinion. Once I posted the thing I liked, I got carried away with my dislikes. Honestly, I had no intention of causing problems with anyone, and I truly regret my comments have even a "hardly" affect on you. If you still think that I'm a jerk, well, then I guess your free to think that. As for me, I hope 4E turns out to be everything you are expecting.

Facetious Top Three: ;)

1. Banning of the Most Outstanding Asshatters.
2. Hilarious remarks like Wormwood's above.
3. Panic threads, like OMG WotC Killed My Unborn Fetus!!!

I've laughed more in response to these sorts of things than ever before on ENWorld. Bonus points to Vigilance too (AND to Sykopup's apology. Well done, sir. )

P.S. Wormwood, come to Circvsmaximvs.com. Join the Dark Side!

Chuck Rice look.

Yeah, the people who hate 4e and who can't leave a single thread untouched by their unique viewpoint, even a thread that says "tell me what you LIKE".

Nice job attempting to godwin my point skippy.

Godwin your point? For the sake of board harmony, I don't want to know what you mean by that.

In any case, please don't call me Skippy.

Anyway....

I'm looking forward to faster character and monster generation. Even though I really didn't have a problem with these aspects of the game in 3.5, I wouldn't mind the process being quicker. If it approaches the level of ease of Cinematic Unisystem, even better (although I have been tempted lately simply to run a D&D-type game using the Dungeons and Zombies supplement.)

I'm also excited about the end of the so-called "christmas tree effect." (Anyone care to explain the origin of this term?) It never really bothered me much in 3.5, but I do like the idea of characters not having to rely so much on magic items. I like the idea of mostly self-reliant characters with just a few magical items sprinkled among the group, items that are special and really mean something to the characters who possess them. I really enjoy the OGL Conan game for this reason; the characters are dangerous and competent even without any magical or even special items at all.

To me, the top 3 positive things so far about 4E have been:

1) Promised reduction in the importance of having a steamer trunk full of magic items

2) Simplified monster statblock

3) Monsters not designed on the PC rules set.

Hrm, top three positives:

1) Willingness to examine every aspect of the game and chuck anything that doesn't fit.

2) Less reliance on alignment.

3) Willingness to bring adult themes (such as the apparent Warlock) into the core of the game.

An honest attempt at a difficult proposition

I'll admit I'm a 4e hater, but I'll try:

1. Removal or reduction of importance of alignment. Hallelujah! This one means a lot to me.

2. Possibly less magic items going around.

3. A promise of a faster combat system (though I'm far from convinced that it's actually going to turn out to be faster once we get to see it).

Don't ask to see my list of things I'm dreading about 4e though...

I'm cautiously optomistic about 4E, but the debacle that was 3.x makes me a little skeptical. A lot of the things I've heard about 4E are encouraging though, especially:

1. Less reliance on magic items.

2. Simplified mechanics/math/gameplay. The new monster stat blocks look great. I don't want to sit for several hours before every session writing up statblocks like 3.x demanded. I want the ease of play of a game like Savage Worlds.

3. More freedom built in for DMs- monsters and PCs don't use the same rules, and not every situation will have a rule codified like in 3.x I found that the shackles of things like wealth per level guidelines, assumed EL/CR, NPC and monster statting, and minute detail for things like grappling, attacks of opportunity, etc sucked the fun out of the game, especially when players assume you MUST use all those rules from the book. All of those things need to die a horrible death, and the DM should be encouraged to keep things moving and run the game based on the players trusting the GM more than the ruleset. 4E seems to be moving in that direction, and I'm very happy about that.

No apologies neccessary!

We'll see if this old grog can latch onto 4E once it surfaces. I'm hoping it will be moldable/tweakable enough to my own "classic" tastes. There were a ton of things I hated about 3E. Mostly rules/rule complexity. 4E (so far) looks like I'll just need to make some flavor changes which should prove easier. I hope ;)

I'll give it a shot and see what happens.
