Okay, D&D 3.5 grognards . . . are you *glad* your game is out of print?

I'm happy it's going OOP. Eventually the books will get cheaper and easier to trade for. :D

Not that I won't be getting 4E, because I will.

This got me to thinking and I have to say that there is something relaxing about the fact that there will be a severe reduction in 3.5 material - I know there may be 3rd parties out there that keep the flow at a trickle and that will be appreciated.

I look back on my early years of D&D. At the start I had nothing but the original red book and my imagination. Eventually I cobbled together a few additional books, but I never really had a vast collection, my greatest source of information was my buddy's Dragon collection. I have to say that this was some of the funnest gaming I ever experienced.

Admittedly some of that falls back on the sense of wonder and excitement that I think all new gamers experience, but that can't be all of it. To some degree I believe that the overwhelming amount of material out there has handicapped some of our imaginations. Oh, I'm not going to generalize, because I know many of you out there are completely unaffected by "The Next Big Thing" and happily go about your enjoyment of the game - good on ya. For that select few of us though, I think the sourcebook glut has become something of a crutch and I, for one, look forward to the fact that I will have to stand on my own.

Sure I have signifcantly more resources that I did in the beginning, but I know what my imagination is capable of and I am eager to discover what it has in store for me, especially with all the resources now at my command. I am in no way disappointed that the temptation of the "WotC Book of the Month" will be falling to the wayside.

I still like D&D 3.5 a lot, and despite the fact that I'll probably like 4e a lot, I'll still keep my 3.5 stuff. In fact, the plan is to continue using it, and to bulk up on the last few books that I wanted that I didn't get yet. I'm guessing that with 4e's announcement, the prices will only continue to go down online.

I don't know how much lower they can drop. Since 4E's announcement I've spent $45 and bought the FR CS, Dragonlance CS, Manual of the Planes, and the Spell Compendium. That includes shipping and each were from a different seller (so I didn't get a break on the S&H).

I wasn't aware that 3.5 was out of print. I even thought a new rulebook was coming out next month.

Regardless, thanks to the SRD I predict 3.x will receive plenty of 3rd part publisher support for a long time so the treadmill will keep on going.

I finally stopped my compulsive rulebook buying back when the 5th "Complete" series book came out. It seemed like they were simply recycling through the basic four classes again with more sub-par material that would never see the light of day in actual play (for me). Eventually I became extremely frustrated with the volume of not-so-useful character options and pared my collection back down to the core books plus some setting and adventure material. I have been much happier as a GM since then.

I got off the treadmill a while ago and the announcement of 4E hasn't really affected me that much. Then again, I'm not a real 3.5 grognard. I'm very excited to see 4E and will buy all the core books from that. I think I've learned my lesson from 3E, and hope to be able to stop myself after just the core books.

I can understand the sentiments of the OP. Still, if you've been on the treadmill all this time even if you get off now you're still stuck with an unwieldy mess (referring to the sheer volume of additional rules material that has come out).

I apologize if the thread title confused you. Fortunately, everyone else seemed to understand it. ;)

Yep, I deserved that one! I should have put a smiley next to my first sentence to better indicate the tone in which it was intended. I did make a few other comments if you were interested in the conversation you started. :p
