This got me to thinking and I have to say that there is something relaxing about the fact that there will be a severe reduction in 3.5 material - I know there may be 3rd parties out there that keep the flow at a trickle and that will be appreciated.
I look back on my early years of D&D. At the start I had nothing but the original red book and my imagination. Eventually I cobbled together a few additional books, but I never really had a vast collection, my greatest source of information was my buddy's Dragon collection. I have to say that this was some of the funnest gaming I ever experienced.
Admittedly some of that falls back on the sense of wonder and excitement that I think all new gamers experience, but that can't be all of it. To some degree I believe that the overwhelming amount of material out there has handicapped some of our imaginations. Oh, I'm not going to generalize, because I know many of you out there are completely unaffected by "The Next Big Thing" and happily go about your enjoyment of the game - good on ya. For that select few of us though, I think the sourcebook glut has become something of a crutch and I, for one, look forward to the fact that I will have to stand on my own.
Sure I have signifcantly more resources that I did in the beginning, but I know what my imagination is capable of and I am eager to discover what it has in store for me, especially with all the resources now at my command. I am in no way disappointed that the temptation of the "WotC Book of the Month" will be falling to the wayside.
