Okay THe Deck of Many things...

I just want to brag that I pulled 30 times from the Deck last week, and whenever I had the option of drawing more cards after one of my draws, I did so.

I ended up way on top, going from 1st to 16th level, had a small keep, 5 4th level fighters, 2 major magic weapons, 2 medium wondrous items, and a dozen wishes.

I had the enmity of 2 outsiders, I changed alignment 7 times, I lost all of my worldly possessions a couple of times before I got my magic items, I used my "escape any situation" cards a couple of times to escape from a later pull, and I had to fight the Dread Wraith or die (but I used a wish to smack it down). All in all, I was happy with my luck.

Ah, I have nothing but great memories of all of the campaigns that I have been in that the Deck of Many Things has reared it's head. I had a character that was completely made by Emnity with an Outer Planes creature. I've seen the most spectacular and hilarious character death at it's hands. I've saved my character life with Fates: avoid any one situtation once, and gone to hell and back.

Above all, have fun!

My question is this: What DM, in his right mind OR wrong mind, would give the Deck of Many Things to a 1st-level party?

Raises Hand

Great way to start a game...random determination of fate...limit them to one card each and watch them sweat!!

(I think the rule re: gaining XP to advance more than one level at a time are still in effect in 3.5 - you gain your level and are 1 XP shy of next level, all extra XP are lost.)

Can you tell me where that rule is located? I can't seem to find any mention of it in 3.0 or 3.5. :\

I don't have my books here, but I'll try to find it tonight when I get home from work for you. (I could be making stuff up, but I'm sure I read that rule somewhere).

Its in the Player's handbook, in the multiclassing part of the classes chapter......i think.
