Great way to start a game...random determination of fate...limit them to one card each and watch them sweat!!

Actually, that's a horrible idea. You'd be giving the PCs the benefits of the cards, with none of the drawbacks. So what if a PC loses all of his magic items? He hasn't even gotten any! He's imprisoned, you say? Eh, just roll up a new one. They were only 1st level anyway. He's gotta fight death? See the last one. Oh, he gains a major magic item? Sweet! A 1st-level Fighter with a +5 Keen Thundering Wounding Longsword! Campaign-breaking, here I come!
