because i went to my wizards store and we play on wednesdays (for a dollar) and they said it did but i was like Fwa? Ummm ok ...

do you have any proof?

Because two armor bonuses (with the execption of normal armor and a shield) do not stack. You simply apply the better of the two.

Mage Armor provides an armor bonus. The PHB says so in the spell description. From the SRD:

An invisible but tangible field of force surrounds the subject of mage armor, providing a +4 armor bonus to AC. Unlike mundane armor, mage armor entails no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or speed reduction. Since mage armor is made of force, incorporeal creatures can’t bypass it the way they do normal armor.

Armor provides an armor bonus. The PHB says so in the equipment section under the description of 'Armor Bonus'. This description also notes that the armor bonus granted by armor does not stack with Bracers of Armor or Mage Armor. From the SRD:

Armor Bonus: The protective value of the armor. Bonuses from armor and a shield stack. This bonus is an armor bonus, so it does not stack with other effects that increase an armor bonus, such as the mage armor spell or bracers of armor.

If that isn't enough, the general rule is that like bonuses never stack. From the SRD:

Bonuses of different types always stack. Identical types of bonuses do not stack.

Different named bonus types all stack, but usually a named bonus does not stack with another bonus of the same name (except for enhancement bonuses to armor and shields, enhancement bonuses to ranged weapons and their ammunition, dodge bonuses, synergy bonuses, and some circumstance bonuses).

The guys at your Wizard's store don't know what they are doing. People really should actually read the PHB before they decide to make rulings. That's where the rules are.

nice icon-thingee Vamp-groupy!

btw ... you could have mage armor and normal armor on at the same time, when that spectre or ghost tries to hit you (bypassing your standard armor) your mage armor will still be there! it's only +4 AC, but that's better than +0!

Wolf makes a good point: sometimes it's highly useful to have mage armor and normal armor on at the same time.

My druid PC and the party monk chipped in to buy a wand of mage armor for the party sorceror. Even though I wear a suit of armor with +5 AC, I take a shot from the wand before going into battles: when I wildshape, my armor goes away but the mage armor remains. It's pretty useful.

Yeah. Nothing I love more than a big fat animated gif equal to about 15 lines of text in someone's signature.

...hey...that gives me an idea for another feat... :D

Of course he does - if you've served in the Legion of Caliban, you'll certainly have developed elite skills concerning D&D rules. :D

And Angelsboi: Cool sig pic!
