I mean, I guess I'm struggling to tell the difference between this and gymnastic floor routines, at least in terms of the physical skill and athleticism on display.

It’s essentially a culturally different take on the same kind of athleticism. Breakdance IS floor gymnastics.

And its roots go farther back than most realize. Some of the moves you see from street crews evolved from tap & other dance styles, first captured on films from the black & white era. The Nicholas Brothers probably would have loved breakdancing…and might have been damn good at it themselves:

I would love to see competitive Tap at the Olympics :)

Breaking wont be at LA but there is a push to have it and Ballroom recognised for Brisbane

Fascinating. This is the problem/joy of the Olympics, we all get to indulge in some armchair quarterbacking and become experts in things we just discovered.

I was watching fencing, the bronze medal match with Eleanor Harvey winning Canada's first ever fencing medal in the Games, and while was interesting, it was also arcane and sometimes just difficult to understand the strategies involved. And I'm sure if I hadn't started knowing the results already, the patriotism would've kicked in I'd have been up in arms over any call against Harvey.

Anyway, this is why I don't mind "artistic" sports in the Olympics, because they are sometimes way more interesting to watch and at least provide fun controversies.

The part of that article where they try to say her dancing wasn't that bad, seems like a very odd attempt to justify the poor performance with an intellectual argument. I get that technique and self expression are not always aligned. But there is a different between say a musician who is a little sloppy, yet expresses something emotionally moving and interesting with that sloppiness and a musician who just so bad it makes you cringe to listen to them. I would say her whole performance was just cringey to watch.

Three things-

1. What is the least impressive event to you, in terms of someone saying, "I am an Olympian."

2. What is the coolest event that doesn't get all the press (not the 100m, or swimming, or gymnastics)?

3. Finally, what other thoughts do you have? I mean, other than learning that all the Olympic swimmers pee in the pool?

1) That's tough to say. I haven't regularly watched the past few, so I'm not even really sure what is currently considered an Olympic Sport.

That being said, the few clips I've seen of Breaking have negatively skewed how I would perceive that.

2) Biathalon

3) Why isn't pole dancing an Olympic Sport?

Edit: Is axe throwing an Olympic Event? Darts?

RE: Raygun

I’ve seen some allegations of impropriety regarding her being Australia’s representative in the breaking competition, and several of them have seemingly been debunked.

But then you see this performance from Australia’s runner up…

Tangentially, I also noticed one person jokingly (?) suggesting that the overall level of competition was lower than expected because most of the upper echelons of the breaking scenes might not be able to pass Olympic or country-level anti-doping/drug rules.

Certainly, we didn’t get much like this:

Or this:
