OMG! My Mom ROCKS!!! She made my day!

As some of you may have read in past posts I've made, my mother goes to a lot of book sales. It's a hobby of hers that she really enjoys. She picks up all kinds of different books: romance, mystery, children's books and 1st editions for her (she collects the latter too types)... horror, mystery and some fantasy for my dad... mysteries and military for my uncle... and fantasy & sci fi for me. She's found some great stuff over the years, and I owe my 1,000+ book collection mostly to her. She's also gotten very good at recognizing fantasy and sci fi authors, artists, etc.
Well, today has to have been her best find for me ever. She gave me a call around 5PMish (I was sleeping during a lazy Sat, after a busy and late Fri). She found a bunch of DL & FR novels, and found a couple of other cool books, including the sequel to another book I had (which by far is one of the hardest things to do sometimes, to find missing books a from series you have.. especially the old ones) when she told something that woke my butt up.
Mom: "I found this DL book, Dragonlance Campaign Setting... it's by Weis & Perrin".
Me: Holy crap, "Mom, does it say D20 on it somewhere?"
Mom: "Yeah."
Me: "Mom that's awesome. I've wanted that book for a while. That's for running Dragonlance for the new D&D." (my mom knows SOME stuff about D&D, mostly to help her find books ;), but also stuff I've just mentioned)
Mom: "Oh good. I didn't realize it was a $40 book"
Me: "How much did you pay?"
Mom: "A $1."
Me: !!!! "Wow! Very cool." Then, she stunned me even more.
Mom:"I found a few other books. D&D Core Rule Book I 3.5, D&D Core Rule Book II 3.5, & another book."
Me:!!??!!! "Um Mom, does it say Monster Manual on it?"
Mom: "Oh, yeah it does. 3.5."
Me: !!! "Uh, how much did you pay for them?"
Mom: "$1 a piece. Did I do good?"
Me: "Mom, you ROCK!!! OMG, I think I'm gonna cry."
Mom: "Oh, don't cry!"
Me: "Those are $30 a piece. They're the books I was telling you I wanted to get, ya know the whole set... it was cheaper on Walmart.com or Amazon or something?"
Mom: "Oh, good. Ya know, I wasn't gonna get them, but I figure you could alway sell them or something at that comic book place (Dragon's Den in Poughkeepsie... we stopped there after my last visit on the way to the train station... I think I was the oldest gamer in there with my parents with me :D )
Me: "MOM, you just got $130 dollars worth of game books for 4 bucks!!!"
Mom: "Yeah, no tax either."

So, there you have it... my mom rocks. She found these 4 books at a sale she wasn't even really planning on going to. She said it was at a library that's on the way back from the other sale she went to (where she got the novels). Usually they're open on Sat. and sell used books on that day, but they just happened to advertise in some paper about today, so she decided to stop. She didn't find anything else for anyone there either.
Plus, PLUS I happened to ask her if she know anybody that dabbled with PCs because my is in need for a serious overhaul (I'd like to reformat and reinstall everything and start from scratch), and while I've helped before in updating the thing and working on it's insides and stuff, I don't know enough to tackle it by myself and the ex took his PC geekness and all "our" PC geek friends with him. She said no. "Aw nuts" I said to that & I mentioned that I needed to actually do more than just tune up the thing, but really upgrade (so then I mentioned, as simply as I could, what that might involve "I need a new chip, but will it fit in my mother board, and will I need a new case, and what about heat distribution?"... yeah, I can talk some of the talk, but can walk very little of the walk :)). So she just say's, "Well, maybe we'll look into getting you a new Dell." I was stunned, since she's already been helping out $ wise with some of my bills and stuff, and while money's not THAT tight for them, it don't grow very well on trees for them either. So, yet again I say, "My Mom ROCKS!!! (Um, dad's ok too, but mostly he's just a potato... couch potato... but he's there for me too, just quieter and less noticeably ;) )
Ya know, I've always believed in doing good deeds... the little things. Holding doors for people, telling cashiers to "have a nice day", etc. Yesterday, I went to the library and while I was checking out, this woman came over to ask for change for a $5 to make copies. She said the machine wasn't working. The people that worked there (I don't know which are librarians and which are volunteers) said they couldn't give change, the "something" office was closed, and there's another machine (note: the downtown Buffalo Library is 3 stories). I'd just paid a fine in cash and got change, so I knew there was $ somewhere... and didn't either of the guys back there have a wallet? So, I gave the woman change. She thanked me very nicely and actually said, "it was a very nice thing for me to do" to which I replied, "well, ya know 'do a nice deed' and 'do unto others' 'n stuff... you're very welcome." Karma smiled on me today.
Kinda weird too, considering I found out the Pope had passed today (I'm not really any religion, but still, I'm sad he passed... he seemed like a nice man, regardless of everything else he was).
So today, I celebrated life. I turned on the radio and danced and acted silly while I made dinner. I had good music, good food (tacos.. mmmm) good company (ok, it was my cat, but she's a fun gal to hang with :) ), and some good luck. I watched One of the BtVS DVDs I got from the library and watched episodes I'd only seen once (unfortunately) from the 5th season like Family and Fool for Love (which I cried at the end of, but that was cool too).
I'm now going to make some hot chocolate w/ frozen Cool Whip on top (hot cocoa w/ cold whipped cream... mmmmmm), hang with the cat come more, and celebrate good stuff for the rest of the night. So, everybody remember the good stuff, the little stuff, and the people in your life that rock and smile. :D

PS: Betcha you're all surprised to see a "good news" post from me huh? Well, me too, but I think I'll just think of it as another "good thing" from today.

Aye. Mom doesn't care as long as I'm safe and hang with my friends!

My parents never worried about me playing D&Dor any other RPG, although my dad was concerned that I was the only girl in a group of 6 or so guys. :) Luckily, I was dating the GM. Never had a problem with the guys having a girl in the group either... especially after I had my PC shoot some guy in both his knee caps once to keep him from running away (all the other PCs were busy).
Oh, and I forgot to mention that mom's found a few other D&D books before, including: AD&D Oriental Adventures, AD&D Monster Manual, AD&D Player's Handbook, AD&D 2E Monsterous Manual, & The Classic D&D Game boxed set (which was really the box with various and random D&D stuff inside)... or the 1'+ high stack of FR, DL, & D&D comics she got somewhere once. Yup, mom rocks big time. :D

My mother is cut from the same kind of cloth. :)
She has an uncanny knack for finding anything insanely cheap. I've seen her get more things totally free than any one person really should. Even with frugal spending concepts and the like, you still can't touch the deals she gets because half of it is simply being in the right place at the right time... which she almost always is. Sometimes I wish she had passed on that knack genetically.

She actually started me on D&D when I was 8 with a set of 1st edition D&D books, a basic D&D box set, and 5 trilogies of DragonLance for 0.66 cents each item. I still have most of the originals like the 1st print of both Fiend Folio and Dieties & Demigods that were also 0.66 cents from the same thrift store she frequented.

Now that I'm older she doesn't seem to shop as much. *sigh* Good to hear someone else is. :)

As to being the only girl in a group full of guys, I'm rather suprised. I tend to run games where I'm the only guy in a group full of girls. Right now my Star Wars game is 3 guys and 3 girls. Sometimes I think I'm the only one who knows female gamers.

Well, we grow up in not that big of a county. Each graduating class had about 200 people. I think the guys were also surprised because all their girlfriends wanted nothing to do with RPGs and many times would try to get them to not play (they played pretty much EVERY Fri. night).

Can she adopt me?

Sorry, but she's got her hands full with just me. ;)

Oh, and she made a mistake... the Monster Manual wasn't 3.5. However, it might be the 2nd printing with the errata in it, so I might switch 3.0 books. That's when they started to put the errata in, right?
