? on buying magic items

The PCs in my campaign would never sell a magic item - donate it to some worthy cause or person maybe, but selling? Naw. Magic items are very rare imc, so they won't be sold.

If it's a +1 or +2 weapon, armor, or shield, I don't have a problem with it. If it's a magical item of equal or lesser value to the +2 equivalents, I don't generally have a problem with it.

If it's a "+3 keen chaotic icy burst great sword", then they can find an item that fulfills part of that requirement. But they will have to commission the rest. Otherwise, that is WAY too specific for me.

IIRC, going by the book, _all_ items over 1000 gp value have to be commissioned anyway. So you could get that +8 equivalent weapon, it'll just take about four months (128 days) to finish.

Some people seem to think that allowing free purchase of magic items automatically equates to having them available off the shelf. Some people are very strange.

Well see IMC I have a 'favour' mechanic which determines the degree to which a PC can call on others in her community for aid. When I said above that the Item crafter has to 'like you' it was a reference to Favour.
Anyway favour is a combination of Charisma, Social Status and Repute, it can be increased but completing a task, gaining status or flattery. In fact with enough flavour a PC can even get some magic items for free!

As to selling magic items
Because they are limited in supply most items are too valueable to on sell, I also tend to use 'legendary items' which have a few hidden powers for the PCs to discover.

Also there is no real market for magic items as most adventurers are attached to communities and other adventuring parties are likely to be enemy agents (so you don't want them getting hold of the Trident of the Waves) Instead it gets left with the community (either its chief or its temple) to be used by its future heroes

To all the people who say "no, you can't buy magic items, ever" - do you allow your characters to sell them? Or are all your characters lugging around magic items that they just can't get rid of? Is the game played from the point of view that your players are the only adventurers in the world, and therefore there is no market for items?
Generally, the PCs only find a few magic items prior to 10th Level, which they keep for utilitarian purposes. Magical weapons and the like begin to make an appearance (usually) between 12th-15th, and they're usually keepers worthy of 20th Level characters in a more standard setting.

Wasn't there a Dragon issue not too long ago that had an article on "leveling" magic weapons?

#289, the ninja issue.

Cool stuff. I used it as the basis for my imbued magic rules.

Larcen - I actually like your method...

Thanks. Like I said it is working out for us so far. It's actually fun entering in the listed Market value and hitting the square root key to "magically" get the % I need for the week. I hope it works out for you if you use it some way. Good luck!
