On coming back to D&D, or Your personal D&D history [Long]

I started with 1e, though my first dnd purchase was the Basic set. But the lure of "Advanced" D&D was too great for me, and I also bought a 1e module the same day.

I have never stopped gaming, though on occasion I have gone for a couple of months without a game.

I heard of D&D growing up but I knew nothing about it. I always had that fantasy bug in me though.

I had the same thing, I had vaguely heard of a fantasy game called D&D but I really had no idea what it was. Where would you buy such a game? I remember we had to actually take the train to another city to get our first D&D books, because none of the stores in our city had any D&D products.

So, what is your personal D&D history? Have you drifted away from D&D but always found yourself returning to this game we all know and love? Am I just a sentimental sap?

I drifted away just before the release of 2nd edition. I already was playing numerous games, with Melanda, Land of Mystery being my primary fantasy system and Champions being a fallback for a number of genres. D&D left me wanting something else. 2nd edition was the nail in the coffin, because they failed to fix enough things (demi-human level limits come to mind).

Through the years, I tried a number of systems looking for the "perfect" system. I never found it. I discovered there will always be some compromise in a system for game purposes. I drifted away from gaming for various reasons for a couple of years. I was just getting back in when 3E was announced. A majority of the changes I wanted to see in 2nd edition were finally being addressed and that caught my interest.

Now, D&D is my game of choice, purely because it's easier to find players who know how to play. At this point in my life I don't have time to learn a new system everytime I play a new campaign.

I started my roleplaying hobby in 1986 at the age of 11. My friends had a group and one of the palyers quit. The group needed a thief character so I continued to play former plyers thief character. We were in Island of Dread and I was hooked for life. That campaing lasted ten years.

I started to DM 1991 D&D Basic and we played to 2000.
In 2000 I launched D&D 3e campaing and we are still playing 3.5e.

1986-2000 D&D Basic
1988-1994 some Runequest campaings, some 2300AD and AD&D 2ed sessios
2000-2005 D&D 3/3.5e
