D&D 4E On the set of 4E: the Beholder

That was funny! That's stuff that can justify the switch to online Dragon!

And it was informative! And we learned: Keep beholders out of dungeons - you DON'T want to encounter a sneezing beholder!

Cheers, LT.

The only mechanics mentioned were:

a) "solo" monster means that an entire party will fight it

and

b) the flesh-to-stone eyebeam has a gradual effect rather than a sudden all-or-nothing effect.

Thanks a lot... Wow, I actually like both

Ha! I called it.

Each level of monster (level 1, level 2, etc.) has four "ranks" which basically says how many of them make a challegeo for a group of 4~5 PC's (8,4,2,1).

Minion --> Monster --> Elite --> Solo

I would also like to note that the camera-man was clearly hit by an "instant" Save or Die effect. That's harly 4E. But maybe he was just a Minion, and different rules apply.

Well, his camera is zoomed in on the beholder, so obviously all gaze attacks that pass through it are going to be appropriately amplified.

Maybe it was just a "hold person" effect that hit mid-step, causing him to fall?

He hasn't fully transitioned to 4e yet. He got pissed off and went back into 3e mode.

Best 4e preview yet.

QFT. I did actually laugh out loud.

Maybe I missed it when they announced it earlier, but they did mention that save or die effects were gone.

Maybe I'm also reading too much into the video, but it did seem like the beholder had a lightning-like attack. I think it's reasonable to assume some direct damage attacks from eyestalks, especially if the save-or-die effects are slow or otherwise changed. But perhaps it was just creative license...

At some point during the 12 Steps, everyone back-slides ...

To build on my thought though, I realize why we have Minion, Monster, Elite and Solo.

As someone on this board pointed out, you can't just double the number of CR 2 monsters to get a CR 4 encounter. The example given was Lizardmen. No matter how many there were, they couldn't hit the PC's, so they were slaughtered.

In 4E, if you want to have 20 monsters vs. a 5th level party, you don't use 2nd level monsters, you just use 20 5th level Minions.

That doesn't solve the "Endless Horde" of monsters issue, but maybe if you used Minions one level lower than the PC's ...

We'll see.
