Shakespeare had this to say on the subject:

The expense of spirit in a waste of shame
Is lust in action; and till action, lust
Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,
Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust;
Enjoy'd no sooner but despised straight;
Past reason hunted; and no sooner had,
Past reason hated, as a swallowed bait,
On purpose laid to make the taker mad:
Mad in pursuit, and in possession so;
Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;
A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;
Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.

All this the world well knows; yet none knows well
To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

I guess he agrees, after a fashion, with those who named women or girlfriends.

When I clicked on the thread topic, I thought it would be all about this poem. It's one of my favorites.

Actually, I have found that anticipation is both a blessing and a curse.

For nothing is as good as building up expectation as our imagination - or as good at tearing it down as reality.

For me this runs the gammit from movies - to computer games - to consulting assignments. About the only 3 things that have been better than anticipated have been my wife and 2 kids.
