OK, So I dream vividly almost every night, and I usually remember my dreams. Often they are, like other people’s dreams I suppose, a little crazy and weird. However, I fell asleep this afternoon and had one of the weirdest dreams of my entire life. Check this out:
I’m back in college. I’m moving into a dorm with my gaming friends. We move in, but find there is already another group of guys living there. It turns out they are gamers too. In fact, I’ve met them before in other dreams. Two in particular were very familiar to me, but I don’t know their names. There was also a third guy there that I didn’t know very well (never met him in a dream or in reality before). They didn’t play d20, but some other sort of game that involved cards as well as characters and dice.
Anyway, we moved in and spent some time dividing up the limited space. My group and I were a little cautious about telling them about the game at first but once it was revealed along with the fact that they gamed as well, we quickly decided to sit down for a session. We decided to use their game system instead of the d20 system.
Right off the bat, my friend Thomas’ character accidentally cast a spell on himself that turned him (the player) into a 2 year old child! I was alarmed. We tried some d20 dispel magic but it don’t work (hey, it was a dream ok?) We tried to rub the pictures off the spell cards that made him so young but the other guys said that might make it permanent. The best thing to do was to just wait for him to get better, which could take years…
Then, I get called down to the administration building. They tell me that if I’m not enrolled, I can’t live on campus. They go on to tell me that they wasted their time teaching me all that stuff I went to school for and that I should make something of myself. They tell me I’ll have to leave tomorrow.
So I go back to the dorm and sleep. It is apparently my last night there before I get kicked out. I am worried about my car being towed…
Then, early in the morning the phone rings. It is a different lady from the administration. She tells me there is a scholarship program that is based on points and that I have acquired 3 points. This is good news since you only need 3 points to get the scholarship. I ask her how this happens.
(now it gets weird)
It seems there was a Mexican leader, she can’t remember his name. She thinks it was Batista, but she knows that’s not right. I am thinking she means the current president Vicente Fox. Anyway, this Mexican leader created a slurry-like sugary substance that helps cure AIDS.
There is also this 18 year-old freshman who has won a scholarship to the school by creating an animated short film. He made the film and wrote an essay about it to win his scholarship. In his essay he says his film was inspired by the Mexican leader who in turn was inspired by something that I wrote.
So you see, I’ve earned 3 points, enough for a scholarship.
So I go to this party in our dorm with all the gaming guys and a bunch of other people. At the party I meet this 18 year old film maker. He starts talking about his film and asks a group of us if we want to watch it. We say “sure” and go into a back room to view it. There is about 15-20 people in the room. As the film starts, the guy explains that this is the second version of it. The first version was more rudimentary. He explains that he was watching some other animations and found them too stilted, too predictable. The movements of the figures seemed boring and uninteresting. He wanted to do something new and different. So he made this new sort of animation.
The film begins. It is about a strange wraith-like black horse. It moves in a strange, ghost-like manner, as if dancing or swaying to unheard music. There might be a rider, but I can’t tell for sure. The horse travels to a battlefield. Soon columns of infantry surround it. Each column is a few men wide and stretches out to one of the four compass points. One column is in the foreground, leading out to the horse. Two other columns are on the flanks, stretching out to east and west (apparently). In the background is the fourth column of soldiers. Everything in the scene is very dark and ominous. The soldiers have swords and pikes. They mean to fight against the horse.
The horse starts to dance. Not like a waltz or a jig, but more like a religious “rain dance” or something like that. The best way I can describe it is a “dance of ruin.” As it dances (on its hind legs, by the way) it becomes more ghostly and ominous. Like a black shadow swirling at the center of the armies it moves and twists. Soon, the solders appear weakened. They slump and sag, their weapons dropping from their hands. Now, they fall, as if slain by some powerful magic. The camera pans back and we see that the columns of armies stretch out to the horizon and the waves of death magic spread over them all.
I get a good feeling from this.
Then the movie ends. As the credits roll, a list of people who helped inspire the move are shown. I and the mexican president are NOT listed. This only bothers me a little. I suddenly know that something bad has happened to every person who has ever seen this film. However, I am confident that nothing bad will happen to me.
We leave the room and in the hall, the party is still going on. Drunk college kids surround me. Then, I’m jostled from behind. A guy I knew in Junior high named Richard suddenly pushes past me. I am surprised to see him, especially since he hasn’t changed in the 15 years since then. I call out to him. He practically ignores me and moves away into the crowed.
The end.
Is that weird or what??
Maybe it seems weirder to me than it sounds to you because it was so vivid.
So anyone want to offer a dream analysis of it???
