One Gamer's Wishlist for Furture Products

First Post
I don't know if it is of much interest, but I thought I would post what I personally would like to see from D20 publishers. Generally, I do not like settings as I do a homebrew campaign. However, of course, I own several setting books and raid them for inspiration and ideas, but I digress. Some of things on my wishlist may already be out and I just have been stuck in my hole too much lately. Anyway, back to my wish list:

1. A monster book that provides levels for monsters. Instead of adding ranger levels to a gnoll, why not just add gnoll levels? Same for trolls, ogres, etc. This would basically work for all humanoid type creatures. Perhaps as the gnoll advances they gain special abilities or access to gnoll-specific feats and such. I would foresee them still having a ranger slant but also have access to such things as Vicious Bite feat, Great Loping feat, etc. Also, if I want to make, for example, a special breed of gnolls, perhaps the Grey Gnolls of the Underwood Forest, I could just assign a level and apply the same special feat to the gnolls. Leaders of the Grey Gnolls would simply be a bit higher in level with the same special feat as the others, but perhaps with additional ones or abilities as well.

2. How To Homebrew books. What I mean here is how to create homebrew campaigns. How to create a mythology, how to create a nation, how to create city, etc. There are many examples of pantheons, nations, cities but nothing I have seen that gives a homebrewer any information on how to create a viable, balanced, and interesting pantheon/nation/city.

3. Alternate sub-systems. For example, alternate magic system, alternate combat system, etc. For example, there has been talk of doing a DR armor system instead of an AC. This kind of tweaks catch my interest.

Of course, this is all just one gamer's wish list... but a gamer can dream, can't he?

Thanks.

Sorry, I had to chuckle when I read this. I've written or am in the process of writing books that do all this stuff:

1. The Monsters Handbook: This rulebook includes all the material you need to add new abilities to monsters while accounting for the increase in CRs. For instance, you could give gnolls a few bonus feats and a racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently while accounting for the increase to their CR. A sample chapter of the book is available at:

http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/pdf/llmhpreview.pdf

2. I have books covering this sort of stuff coming out next year.

3. There's two alternate magic systems in AEG's Magic.

So, sometimes dreams do come true!

Ok my wish list then

Witch World D20 (Please) I know that Steve Jackson Games had the License for a time (Made GURPS Witchworld) --So its a Sourcebook but its a good Sourcebook

Generalized Steampunk Rules with perhaps a light setting involved...basically just a really cool steampunk source.

The Dragon & The Unicorn A Book detailing varying types of both creatures out of myths, and legends of the real world. Make a good PDF line (I.E. The Roc, & The Gryphen, Dwarfs & Elves)

Shadowrun D20 And yes I know about Digitalburn (I almost bought it)

The Homebrew World Creation Kit (HWCK) With essays by the creators of the realms, of Greyhawk, Scarred Lands, Ravenloft etc about designing a professional quality gaming world. (A really big, focused Dungeoncraft Article basically) also with the goody rules to help the DM along on creating his own Topics could include Map Making, Naming, Prestige or Not Prestige Game World Economics.

Fallout D20 Yup its on my wish list, wouldn't be that hard either most of its already there as OGC, cept the stuff that could be filched from the BoVD. And NO I don't think it should be a classless system I like the Idea of a Psion, or a Wastemage The setting has a lot of potential.

Well Lone Wolf is coming out... so wisjes do come true! Other than that:

Legends and Lore: This one should be the monsters of myth.

Blood Bowl d20: I would LOVE to see this! Or at least soemthing similar.

D&D Options: Similar to the Player's and DM's options books of 2nd edition. Although more well balanced. One for combat, one for races and classes, one for magic, etc.

Hit our website (addy in my sig)... check out the products, there's not much there in detail yet, but the idea will get across... the Campaign Builder's Series is almost exactly what you're looking for. Information on building campaigns, giving you the info you need to do it... From government types to laws, from commerce and trade rules to societal settings/creation and kingdom/empire management.

Plus we plan on making software to go with that stuff to make it fast and easy as well. :)

Ask and ye shall recieve!

<<1. A monster book that provides levels for monsters. Instead of adding ranger levels to a gnoll, why not just add gnoll levels?>>

Isn't this just the same thing as adding hit dice to a monster? The Monster Manual has rules for increasing a creature's HD, which in turn, increase its skills, feats, BAB, size, etc. In the end, this will drive up the CR or the creature. Is this what your talking about?

<<How To Homebrew books.>>

I'd actually like to see this too, but as a PDF product. I don't think I'd like to pay more than $10 for this type of material.

<<Alternate sub-systems.

Hey, don't forget the really cool alternate magic system called, "The Elements of Magic". This though is what I'd really like to see. I want people to push the d20 rules beyond the Core Rulebooks. Enough with the class/race books already. Give me something NEW!!! Things like Mongoose's Chaos Magic, Nat 20's 4CTF and EoM, or even Green Ronin's M&M. I think the single most exciting product coming out next year is Malhavoc's Arcana Unearthed. New magic system, different combat system, etc.

<<Generalized Steampunk Rules>>

Oh, yes. I think this would be great. I'm delving into the creation of my first homebrewed setting and this will definitely be a part of it. Seeing as how there are very few sources on this, I'd like to see some.

I posted my wishlist on a thread over in General Discussion, but since this is here, I shall contribute to this thread as well. I have a personal bit of dismay currently (and throughout 2002) about d20 publishers not meeting my needs, so hopefully this is at least a tiny bit valuable. *shrug* (In fact, only *one* publisher, Necromancer Games, meets any of my needs - and only a small portion.)

1) Mass combat system - has various levels of complexity that can be used or discarded, can take into account tactics (everything from digging trenches to attacking supply lines) and does not require miniatures. Malhavoc's upcoming event book might cover this, but I'm skeptical.

2) Realm/barony/kingdom-running system - there's been more than 25 years of gaming, and this *still* doesn't exist?? I'm looking for a detailed set of rules for PCs running their own realm (everything from a small little region up to a kingdom). Includes rules that start from the very beginning - the PCs build their stronghold in the middle of nowhere, and work up from there. How much do roads (and other infrastructure) cost that the PCs build? How many settlers show up? When? What resources can they harvest? How much? What's the value? What taxes are appropriate? Also includes rules for populace "general happiness".

3) More higher-level adventures (levels 13+).

Others:
Epic-level support (adventures), and lots of them (when and if the ELHB ends up in the SRD).

Ah well. The bright side is, gaming has been relatively cheap for the last little while, as all the products coming out have been relatively useless (and derivative) to me.

"Cities:Born In Stone", published by Otherworld and written by me :), should tell you all you need to know to make cities in your fantasy games. It is, to my knowledge, the first game supplement about cities, rather than about A city. (Actually, I lie:Cities, by Midkemia press, did this too, but it's long out of print and CBIS is many times longer.)

Shameless hype over.

Just really one for me. I know, shame on me, just one, how can that be? But, in the end, yes, just one that I would really really really like to see made.

A really really really good book on cybernetics. Digital Burn, although they made an effort, was just plain wrong. $35.00 for 150 pages, were the makers trying to scam me out of my money. That was my thought when I saw it.

and, coming a distant second (see, there is another one I wouldn't mind, so its not just one)...is a conversion of Torg licenses and released to the public for d20/OGL.

Heathen Oracle will have homebrew scenario resource books coming out soon within the next several months, extremely extensive and alot of construction material, crunchy bits like Grape Nuts.
