To say more about why my question, I have been again working on my setting, and wanted to get rid of the core races which sound too faery/Tolkien/vanilla to me. The setting is European medieval + Celts flavored, and is intended with a more "sword & sorcery" feel (somewhat Conan like) rather than high fantasy.
If you are going more 'Conan like', I might suggest dropping Elves as a PC race outright, gnomes and halflings simply because they are too puny to make any difference in S&S (and gnomes are too inhereantly magical, IMO). Dwarves just seem like an od fit into S&S for me - it might owrk, but not really, IMO.

Oddly enough, I'd say Half-elves given this new information. They could be sporadic "mutants" brone by man, which can harness magic as the fey of mythology (which the blood of which runs in their veins). Their might only be a few such of these people borne each year, and they are very flighty and whimsical, and are natural tricksters.

I dunno, for a S&S psuedo-celtic setting, a half-elf would be dripped with plot-hooks, and yet could still follow his more human path and lay down with a big sword. I like that idea, infact :)

Halflings are cannibals (I am not going into the specifics of that term) like those in Dragon 300 or Dark Sun. They ate the other races into extinction and are targeting humanity next.

10) Parasites which may be physical, magical or psionic. They could be parasites of humanity or other creatures.

For me personally, I'd do away with all of the other races as PC races. Oh, I think it is fine to have elves and what not in the world but I really don't see them as hobknobbing with each other. I mean, for my worlds, there are low population density so it isn't as if they would even come into contact that much. I like how elves and dwarves were presented as mysterious others in folk tales. Every now and again they would have contact with humans, but they were usually portrayed as of an alien mindset. I'd like to bring that back to my games.
