How much of a difference are the rules in 4e and 5e?

There's a pretty big difference, IMO. It's a lot more similar to 3.x than to 4e, but there are definitely aspects of 4e mechanics that were mixed in.

I think the quick start rules are still available for free on the Wizards website, if you're interested. Gives a decent overview of the system.

Though some of character class ability rules change when you play the main rulebook.

Combat is very quick, but it ain't half as interesting, IMHO.

Still, it is fun with a DM who's games I particularly like.
