(OOT) Happy Victoria Day

To those Canadians who actually get a day off today for this pseudo-holiday, Happy Victoria Day! For those working in places like retail where you get screwed on stat holidays, Happy Day-Like-Every-Other-Day-Except-Other-People-Get-the-Damn-Day-Off! I'm unemployed right now, so pretty every day is a holiday.

And, no, Canadians don't have a special affinity for Queen Victoria (though just about every city/town has got a Victoria Park!) but appreciate any excuse to barbeque, drink beer and possibly see fireworks (though Halifax doesn't have Victoria Day fireworks).

Edit: Maybe I'm unemployed because my spelling sucks so bad.

Happy Victoria Day!

I'm enjoying the day off (you got to love three day weekends) with a few beers and the chicken stir-fry that I just made. :) There were a lot of fireworks last night, but there will be more tonight.

Cheers,
Tim

As this is a non-political board I won't bother to go too deeply into the flaws inherent in this comment, except to note that Victoria Day is somewhat similar to President's Day in the US--the holiday is to mark the birthday celebration of our current Sovereign Lady, HM Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada (whose actual birthday is April 21). The delay in celebrating the affair is due to concerns over the weather and as a matter of tradition/heritage. I understand that in HM's realm of Great Britain the celebrations take place sometime in June.

The date's association with HM Queen Victoria stems from the fact she was the reigning monarch at the time of the confederation of the first four provinces in the Dominion, and the 24th of May was her birthdate. The holiday now falls on the Monday of the weekend closest to and prior to that day. And so, yes, many Canadians, in fact, do recognise and continue to maintain a special affinity for Queen Victoria and her successors.

And, indeed, I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. :D

 Er, so, it wasn't amusing? 'Cause that was the only intent. Anything else you read into it is from your end, not mine.

And the sun is still shining in Halifax! Hallelujah!
