Because that's how the comedic principle of his type of character works.
He's demonstratably the "buffoon" of the group. On occassion, when everyone else can't figure something out, it's up to the buffoon to have a moment of clarity and state the obvious solution that everyone missed.
Everybody stands and stares for a moment. Everybody smacks themselves on their respective foreheads. Somebody shouts out, "Why didn't we think of that?" Somebody else kisses the buffoon on the mouth, or some other embarrassing bit of endearment, and says, "Buffoon! You're a genius!" Everybody has a good laugh, and the adventure continues on.
It's a staple of comedy teams, especially in sit-coms and action-adventures.
Mr. Burlew gives the basic joke a bit of a twist by having them cross the Valley's forgetfulness field before they actually have a chance to go back and fix the mistake.
