OotS #374

Ah, the good ol' "persons fall, staggers back up, and get something to fall on him or her" gag. It always work.

Hmm.. What's medium-sized, has DR up the wazoo, is dumber than a dumptruck, and hits as hard as one?

Who says it's medium-sized?

All we know for sure is that its eyes are around medium-sized humanoid eye height.

(The umbrella of magical darkness could have had magical extra-dimensional space, or something. In all the non-umbrella strips, the creature in darkness always has a LOT of room to expand off-panel.)

Well, I'm thinking Miko got off very lightly there.

Going by her conversation with Windstriker, clearly she did lie, and was preparing to cheat. Possibly her deity will let her off for having not had a chance to put her intention into practice.

Re-reading the strip, it seems that she actually didn't lie or cheat. she agrees to play the game, then lose on purpose. The stip up her bottom part seems to be softening, but she didn't lie or cheat.

The creature challenged her to see who could hit the lightest, and she said she accepted that challenge. She then set out to do precisely the opposite.

So, what... 20d6 for her own fall, another 20d6 for her horse landing on her?

Too bad nobody can die from a comedy pratfall. Oh well.

Go Creature in the Darkness!

Myself, I find interesting the fact that she just survived 20d6 falling damage, possibly twice depending on how Windstriker... erm, striking her dealt damage. :) Her Monk levels wouldn't let her avoid any falling damage in this case because it's obvious there are no walls or other vertical objects around for her to use to slow the fall.

Oh, and the Creature in Darkness certainly has Awesome Blow; look how far it hit her! :D But that also makes its minimum true size Huge.

Awesome Blow can be taken at large, but only ever knocks someone back 10 feet. I'd say the creature has an (Ex) ability that approximates Awesome Blow but allows for greater distances.

Hmm, a large creature (perhaps hunched over under that umbrella?) with Awesome Blow or a similar ability, excessive Strength, low Int, excessive Strength, and an extreme amount of DR - oh, and did I mention excessive Strength?

With one 'light' hit, it managed to knock Miko through a stone wall followed by hundreds of feet through the air. And when her steed, having readied an action, attacked, it managed to strike it (likely with an AoO, I'm guessing), doing the same to this large sized creature. That is some really really impressive strength.

Why do I have a feeling that when the creature is revealed, it will turn out to be a DM created creature - not a creature from one of the MM, 3e or prior edition.

D20 Modern has more sensible rules for falling objects. (It's rules for falling humans are actually less sensible than those of DnD.*) A horse, being a Large object, would deal 2d6 damage + 1d6 per 10 feet fallen (not counting the first 10 feet, I believe), Reflex save DC 20 half. Miko has Evasion, but not Improved Evasion; she failed her save. How far do you think she and Windstriker fell? I don't think she fell 200 feet straight down. In any event, assuming she failed her save, she should take 2xd6 + 2d6 damage, where x is the distance fallen (divided by ten feet, perhaps not including the first ten feet). But that's D20 Modern rules.

* It's similar, but you make a Reflex save DC 10 + 1 per ten feet fallen to take half damage. You can literally evade the ground, although no reasonable GM actually allows that to happen.

I have no idea, because I think that creature is, like Vaarsuvius' sex, a mystery that will never be solved.
