They can be wearing heavy armor and running, too. In any case, they're not wearing medium armor, unless they purposefully run less distance than what's allowed.

Not that their AC matters, since they are all fighting with Large Pikes (reach of 20 feet). each hit will probably kill a hobgoblin.
