What I'm saying is that one would have suspected that a city founded by and ruled by Paladins would have the same sort of military culture as the hobgoblins.

The city isn't founded by paladins, it existed before the Sapphire Guard was created. In fact, Soon Kim was the first paladin of the Sapphire Guard, the others were honorable samurai that became paladins after.

The city isn't ruled by paladins either, it's ruled by a hereditary king, the previous was a CG aristocrat not an LG paladin. (Hinjo is a bit of a novelty, apparently.) The AC nobility certainly appears to be anything but paladins, since they flee like cowards and hire assassins for the most ludicrous pretexts.

Azure City is just a blue-obsessed, Asian-themed medieval city which happens to be the home of a large paladin order, but that's all.

The paladins aren't part of the military either, they're a separate organization with their own goals and their own chain of command. In this case, they had to work with the army of course, but that was an exceptional circumstance.

Ahh... well that does explain abit of it. From my faulty memory of the crayola narrative, I'd gotten the impression that the whole 'Order of the Gates' bit occurred like 1000 years ago. I didn't catch the first time that the whole thing was less than 100 years in the past.

I'm operating under the assumption that the boats wouldn't have sailed away already.

Regardless, it was indicated that the boats were full. Whether or not they had sailed is moot.

You commandeer their boats for evacuation purposes. No one said you had to kill anyone (unless they react violently).

The point made was to force them into conscription. Unless you can threaten them with death or imprisonment, what can one do to force them to fight? Given what we've seen so far, the nobles would simply refuse to fight no matter what.

If the boats were all pre-emptively burned, they certainly would fight.

Ridiculous. They know reinforcements aren't coming. Had their own army not run away they may have had a hope of a chance (not that they'd actually have had a chance), but after the cop-out, it was over.

They still could have bought time for the defenders elsewhere to make an orderly retreat to the castle in the background - sacrificing themselves, but helping the others to regain their defensive advantage.

Now these other defenders on the other flank will be caught by the stampede, and likely be crushed - because most of the defenders at the breach fled their post.

Or switch sides.

Exactly. Or, they'd hole up in a building they felt they could defend and use their personal guard to try and wait it out. Or simply refuse to fight, demanding to be protected due to their "status."

A few might decide they have no choice, but I figure most would simply refuse to fight.
