Or it's possible that they do, and they've just used them all up.

In fact, V says as much in the comic, "I have expended most of my magic. I have no potions or scrolls left, and but a single spell remaining."

It's clear the Order of the Stick have to retreat and recharge.
  • Roy is dead,
  • V is outta spells,
  • the rest are cut-off, surrounded, and demoralized.

OTOH, we know the Ghost Martyrs are active. They might come streaming out of the throneroom to take out the hobgoblins........

That'd be the smart thing for them to do... Against a horde of hobgoblin mooks, mid-level Paladin ghosts (if ghosts are truly what what they are) would be practically invincible.

Of couse, it seems far more likely that they'll try to shoo Xykon out of the throne room first.

The Order of the Stick seems to be a low-magic campaign world.

The appear to be more in a medium-magic campaign world. Spellcasters of medium to low levels are common and are not viewed as strange, but high level magic is rare (only one mage in Azure City knew 'teleport'). They have been in magic shops, and scrolls and potions appear to be available in fairly large quanities (V bought 13 potions of heroism IIRC). In a touch of humor, spells (for copying into spellbooks) are available in 'booster packs'.

But we haven't seen wands, staves, or similar potent items available for sell. Nor have we seen the OotS 'cash in' even relatively useless items (ring of jumping, bag of tricks) in favor of more obviously useful 'kit' items. This suggests to me that though they probably could sell them, that they couldn't replace them, which leaves even a bag of tricks too useful to divest yourself of for mere cash.

Stripped of some of the humorous elements, this is not far from how I run my own campaigns.

Only one mage in Azure City in the employ of Lord Shojo knew teleport.

Agreed.

#1) The ghosts would easily wipe out the hobgoblins.

#2) The ghosts will probably be wiped out by X instead.

I am almost certain there were. There are many in this modern era who place little to no value on oaths of service and even hold such in contempt. Some of them even have trouble grasping why deserters get shot by their own side.

The Order of the Stick seems to be a low-magic campaign world. There's not really been any scenes in magic shops (other than one time where V was buying scrolls), and none of the characters refer to anything like one. It may be that V's never come across a wand, or staff, for sale that they could cast. And apparently they don't like to scribe scrolls. (Or it's possible that they do, and they've just used them all up.)

Do you honestly think that V would give up XP to scribe his own scrolls? He's still bitter about the cost of writing a spell in his spellbook. Granted, it was just one word. :)
