Exactly right - I'm not saying anything about what the ghost-martyrs may or may not be able to do Just clarifying the ghost-incorporeal-touch spell thing, since there's often some confusion about it.

Except that when the other gates were destroyed, Xykon's plans were thwarted. He doesn't want access to the snarl, but to the gate enclosing the snarl.

The suggestion was made by a fellow Sapphire Guardsman to destroy the gate so Xykon couldn't corrupt it, so O-Chul ran to destroy the Sapphire.

The Sapphire is the gate, or at least the part that seals it, the gate blocks the rift to the Snarl.

Just like the gate in Dorukan's Dungeon had the destruct Glyph (that Elan touched), presumably the destruct mechanism on the Azure City gate is smashing the sapphire (hence Hinjo being so concerned about Miko almost destroying it when she killed Shojo).

Actually, they don't need to sunder the sapphire itself, do they? Just the throne, in the other direction from Miko. Then the sapphire would fall out.
