And now, I am rewarded. Yes, she gained perspective. That was all she truly needed.
Lord Soon offered her perspective, but it's clear that she failed to grasp it even at the moment of death. Like most people, Miko just wasn't cut out to be a paladin.

a most excellent ending.
Miko was never my favorite, but her death and the peace that came to her troubled soul brought me a strong sense of melancholy. I wish I could write half as well as Rich.

If Miko's horse is waiting for her AND going to visit her occasionally, AND the paladin ghosts are escorting her to her new place, then Miko is not going to hell.

I think Roy will come back (lots of jokes about Roy being a level lower than the rest of the OOTS), but I suppose Roy's "player" could introduce a new charater (lots of jokes about how the new guy is "just like Roy").

Ahhh...the 'Beerfest Scenario'.

It's not really clear why Soon couldn't hack the phylactery, since his sword definitely left physical marks on Xykon.
Well, if the sword was symbolic and Soon was merely making Incorporeal Touch Attacks, that would explain it. See, Incorp Touch Attacks don't get a Str bonus to damage, because they're not solid. You can hack the crap out of a living target, but breaking something durable and unliving isn't so easy.

But the deal about killing them just a single time each is a little silly, since it didn't seem like there were any hobby clerics left high enough to resurrect Redcloak if his body was destroyed. And how to you raise a destroyed lich, anyway? True resurrection?
What are you talking about? Look:
(1) Soon kills Xykon and Redcloak
(2) 1d10 days later, Xykon pops back up
(3) Xykon has Redcloak reanimated as an intelligent undead (or The Dark One does)
(4) Even if #3 can't occur (Xykon may not have access to such spells), Xykon still exists...

No. The answer is Roy.

I wonder.

Belkar could still cause the death of V or the Oracle. At a further stretch windstrider could return and die.

And note that cause the death of is not the same as killing. Doing NOTHING could still cause the death of one of those named.

Ah, but you forget the rest of the heroes, who would inevitably find Xykon and Redcloak's remains, under the watchful gaze of Soon, who would then instruct them to destroy the phylactery.

Heck, if Miko had waited a damn minute, SHE could've destroyed the phylactery herself, instead of destroying the gate...

BRAVO! THIS is the ending I hoped for and wished would happen.

No Blackguard (which was preposterous from the very first mention)
No total redemption (I admit I figured she would be)
No ichor

One thing I think most people missed - Miko is at peace, not resting in peace, at peace, right before she dies. Re-reading all of the previous Miko strips, she seems so driven that she cannot see the forest for the trees. A monk (remember her OTHER class) looks for inner peace, something that she never really displayed. After it was all said and done, she missed her horse, the only real anchor that she still clung to as a paladin. As for where will she end up, I am of a mind to say a LG plane, but honestly, I am not 100% committed to that either. Arguments for LN are stong enough for me to doubt it just enough. An afterlife meeting between Roy and Miko would be a good thing I think. Miko has finally realized her errors, meeting Roy in the afterlife would be a solid, set in stone fact that she goofed. (Miko never questioned the gods, they cannot be wrong in her eyes.) Maybe she'll even see Roy for what he truly is and realize what she missed out on, eternal reaward(punishment) is tricky like that. Of course, a little ST banter in heaven might not be all that bad either. ;)

I think we'll cut to Roy in the afterlife "living" it up. He'll be more than content to realize 1) he's in Paradise, 2) he doesn't have to deal with Belkar anymore, and 3) he doesn't have to listen to Elan anymore, etc. Then arrives Miko who annoys him to no end and suddenly he can't wait to get back to the world of the living.
Yep, same ol Viv... :)
