What?

This is disintegrate, people! If Hinjo were killed by it, there would be neither eyes nor "x"s nor any parts recognizable as Hinjo. (Even on a successful save, if you die, you are dust.)

True, but in one panel all you see is a skeleton with a rather nasty looking aura around it. :\

Talk about a crappy roll. A high-ish level Paladin ought to have a damn good chance of making that save. Those always hurt the worst...

Why crappy roll? Hinjo made the save, which is why he wasn't turned to dust.

Right. Like with that black dragon. Two disintegrates, two x-ray views, one successful save, one pile of dust.

Are you kidding?

5d6 damage (what he would take if he made the save) would barely faze Hinjo; a second-level Paladin has a decent chance of surviving that (average 17.5 damage) even given that Disintegrate bypasses the -10 rule. Hinjo is a lot higher than second level and looks uninjured just before the disintegrate hits. He definitely got the full 30-odd dice.

(Wait, I just realized you're probably thinking of pre-3.5 versions of the spell. Disintegrate is not a straight save-or-die effect anymore.)
