Why should V go all Rambo with a crossbow here? First shot, V's visible, and only has d4 for hit dice. Probably something like at least 13d4, but also an elf, so Con penalty and less overall hp. So the best thing to do is go invisible and lay low, let the Sapphire Guard get slaughtered, that's what they're there for.
The guilt and hearing the comment about useless magic is probably what's been setting V off. I don't blame V for leaving, sticking around Hinjo probably doesn't help, and Elan and Durkon seem happy just holding his hand instead of trying to get the group back together and stopping Xykon.
