OotS #791 is up!

It's not that hard to rework the fighter class into a 'warlord' style class provided you provide the feats and skills for it. One thing the 3e fighter class manages well is versitility. Provided the feats are available, the class can morph into anything. It's just a matter of working up what you want the 'class powers' to be and turning them into feats.

My main problem with the 3e treatment of the fighter was two fold:

a) It didn't get enough feats. I prefer the 2/3 progression of the first 2 levels continue rather than switching to a 1/2 progression.
b) Feats weren't treated like class powers and typically feat usage and skill usage was kept too conservative compared to the 'anything goes' seen in magic.

Later attempts to fix this problem relied heavily on 'once per encounter' and 'once per day' sorts of restrictions that effectively turned the fighter into a weak(ish) spellcaster.

Oh I agree. I had a problem with feats in a big way (one reason I hated fighter PrCs, they didn't bother trying to fix feats) but I don't think WotC knew how to balance them in a non-spellcaster-ish way.

However, looking at d20 Modern and various d20 Noble classes, the benefits were usually the "same old" stuff that players often didn't like. (No one likes to give up an action just to give bonuses; it's okay for NPCs but not that fun for players.)

Probably because Fighter Feats are still things that aren't magical and are supposed to be grounded in the vaguely plausible.

"Anything Goes" with magic because, it's magic. Not meaning to start yet another edition war, but making nonmagical class abilities equal to spells in the interest of balance seriously strains suspension of disbelief for some of us.

Now, as for a 3e equivalent of Warlord, the Marshall (from Miniatures Handbook) and Knight (From PHB II) were the 3e precursors to warlord. A Legendary Commander Prestige Class from the DLCS was something that also could be used in a 3e Warlord build.

Plausible in no fashion means weak given that the convention is 'swords & sorcery'.

Did you think I was refering to the practice of turning martial class abilities into spells approvingly?
