Open Grave Excerpt: Rituals and Artifacts

The various "famous" bits, like that from the Dragonomicon and now here are huge thumbs up for me. I'm glad to see these famed monsters updated in these themed books but man, does that mean we're going to need a giants book (one of the few types that didn't materialize for 3rd ed)? And I'm curious to see how the princes/dukes/etc... from demon/devil lore will be handled as whole books could probably be devoted to them.

And some interesting items under the magic items bits...

First off unexpected, thanks for the Christmas present WOTC!

Looks fun, says the Dm.

Someother tidbits from the toc:

Undead Grafts
Alternate Powers

And here is me planning an undeadheavy (particularly heading towards mid paragon and up) campaign.

Edit: The Swoord of Kas looks like it could be a fun artifact to insert into a game. Watching the look on players faces when the wielder gets dominated should be priceless.

I am pretty pumped for this one. What will the alternative powers be? I am always pumped for more undead.
I am putting my bets on alternative Divine Class Powers and perhaps some Wizard Powers?

I wonder what, "Undead Grafts" are? They are just under Rituals and Artifacts so I am willing to bet it is Player based.

Like, for necromancer themed PCs? That's mainly what my heart hopes for.

Weren't there undead graft type things in the Libris Mortis? Like, you could attach a zombie arm or a mohrg tongue to your body or something? Or am I just making this up.

This book is like 4e Libris Mortis+!

Alternative Powers will probably be new attacks or abilities for various monsters that they can gain by giving up an existing ability. Draconomicon has them for the various chromatics, also at the very end of the book.

No, I used them in my old 3e games and they were awesome! Awesome but expensive. I'm wondering how these will be handled - will they just grant properties?

Those templates look tasty too! Spawn of Kyuss and Infected Zombie?

Hmm... If that is the case, that will be a must buy just for that. It will be extremely useful for my Nercomancy meets WWI technology/war setting.

Right forgot about that. Yeah it would make sense if it is the same, the books share lots of the same themes in format (like lairs and such) so would fit.

Hmm. "Undead Servitor" - a ritual for creating a non-combatant, zombie caddie. But still no ritual that I can see for creating an undead that will serve as body/treasure guard (i.e, combatant). Trying to not steal the necromancer's thunder when he comes out for PHB3? ;)
